I cannot help you on Turneffe Flats but I can help you out with information on the Ascension Bay area, lodge, guides etc. Have you thought about or fished Ascension Bay? Fished out of Placencia in May. Met a guy there who had just come from fishing Turneffe and his experience was akin to mine. I was at Turneffe in May over ten years ago, at Blackbird Caye - great trip.

Lots and lots of med bones eating shrimp and crabs; nothing really big. Sandy, turtle grass wading for bones. From boats - plenty of med (50-60lb) tarpon along the many mangrove channels. Permit are starting in May to move onto the deeper flats - mostly solo or small in number schools - but can be big.

It can be windy from the east and showers can pop up, as the rainy season begins around June 1. Locals claim May full moon is usually windy; was last year when we went to Placencia.

Placencia is more remote - zero amenities and less fished. Good guide there: nhttp://www.wyattsfishing.com/main.html

May is a good time to fish Turneffe, however the best months for the big three are July and August. For the most part the bonefish and permit are there year round, but the tarpon tend to migrate. I have fished there in April (out of Turneffe Flats) and there were a few a tarpon, but they really start showing up in June most years.

Turneffe Flats is a great lodge and typically is very well run and managed. Not to mention its a beautiful setting.
