When tying the collars, do you tie the collars shorter than the previous, or all the same length?

Let the effect you are trying to achieve tell you what to do. What is the profile of the baitfish you are imitating, etc. You will need to experiment. Long ang skinny? Short and round?

For a 3/0 hollow fly I like to use two collars of the longest white bucktail I can find up 7", then I tye in four short collars (half length) combining two or three colors and I finish up with a single collar of long white bucktail to give the fly a muted look. Thats a total of 7 collars for a 3/0 hook.
