Here's a simple pattern I've been using for a couple of seasons - it has caught it's fair share of critters.
Hook - Tiemco 811s size #4-1/0
Thread: fine mono
Body: Bucktail, olive over chartreuse over white
Eyes: Stick-on 3D
Head: Aluminum tape, colored with chartreuse/green marker, epoxy coated
Wing: Olive flash topping
Tie the bucktail in layers on top of the hook, starting just behind the eye.
Add flash topping.
Cut a "heart" shaped piece of aluminum tape and center over the thread wraps, sticky side down, with the point facing the hook eye. Fold over and adhere to itself.
Color the tape with the marker, install the eyes, coat entire head with epoxy.
The purpose of the aluminum tape is to give the fly some moderate weight and form a nice, reflective head. It works!
