My bait and bullet club just bought a new 3hr Jiffy legend 10" auger, this baby is a real hoss, but it's not running as smooth as it could. It will only run on full choke(even after it's warmed up) and it won't run very smooth and sometimes dies. I've talked to the service people and they said it could be water in the gas, but I don't see how we could have got water in it, its literally only a few days old and the gas was just purchased and mixed up at 24:1. Seems like it might need a carb or throttle adjustment? It seems like its not getting either the gas or the air that it needs to really start cutting. Any suggestions would be great.
Cheers,
Josh

it does take at least a tank of gas to get the piston rings to seat maybe it will start running better as it brakes in.. fiddle with the choke check the gas filter if there is one..

I'll give a try, as of now it's only had a 1/4 tank of gas through it, so maybe thats the problem, I'll just let it idle all day on the next trip to see if it works out its kinks
Thanks Mike,

there are also two small screws down by the choke, one for air intake
and the other for fuel intake. you may have to tweek it a bit to find the
perfect combination to make your auger run great. caution though, only
a minor turn of these screws go a long way.

When I bought a power auger back in december, the sales person was very adament about not messing with the carborator settings. He said the warrenty would not cover problems in that area.
The auger has run very well, at best I may have run 3/4 tank of gass through it.

So I started up the auger this morning to let it run and burned up another 1/4 of gas and it still was not preforming the way it should be, and died out every time after 8sec of full throttle. So I bring it into a registered repair shop to have it looked at. I come back and they tell me they adjusted it the best they could, so I figured they had it fixed. I get home and start it up and it still dies after 8sec full throttle, so now I'm a little ****ed and head back to the repair shop to ask just how they adjusted it the best they could and the guy said they did all they could. So I told them that I wanted to collect on the warranty and have the auger replaced, cause you can barely cut a hole with it, finally the guy pulled me aside and told me whats up. I guess new EPA emission regs limit the carborator adjustments to keep them clean burning, but all the regulator is, is a plastic cap over the high/low valves, he told me he would get fined and probably loose his job if he did it in the shop, but he basically told me to go home pop off the caps and give the screws a turn till it's running good. So I went home, played with it for 5mins and now she is ready to melt some ice baby!!! And Bob if you are worried about the warranty, well you can just snap the caps back on and no one would know. I can't believe they would sell it that way, barely ran.... Thanks too all for the help, happy fishing.... oh, I know yall got your own RT derby this weekend but the Winni tourny is this weekend too, big fish, big prizes, and lots of fun, anyone going up there?
Cheers,
Josh

I bought mine in New Hampshire so maybe they could be closer to the correct settings. Glad to hear you have the problem solved.

I live right on the NH/VT border, and bought the auger from a shop across the river in VT, I don't think it has anything to do with the state you live in(unless it's California) but I think it is more of a new 2004 EPA rule. The other thing is my auger is a 3hr 10" blade, 42" shaft so it is a monster, so it probably needs more juice then the 6" or 8".

just a quick question I thought 8" was the max size hole you could drill here in mass. has that changed.. 10" seems really big kid/dog could slip right in

Having recently read over the abstracts. There is no mention of the size of ice holes. I know that the Town of Westboro has a bylaw for lake Chauncey stating max hole size at 12".

New Hampshire doesn't have any hole restrictions, some of the lakes up here already have 2ft of ice , so the big hole really helps getting the fish through, the bigger holes also don't freeze up as fast when fishing, but they do freeze up within hours of drilling it if left alone.
I would be more worried about the guys that chain saw out the huge square holes under their shanties then move on.

We are trying to adjust our carburetor on a jiffy ice auger model 30. Does anyone know what the high/low settings are for it?? Please help. Thanks

I think this is controlled by town ordinance, not state. I'm not aware of any restrictions in my neck of the woods. Super big holes should probably be marked with a upright branch or pole, just to be on the safe side. I've had a few big pike on through 8 inch holes and sometimes you just can't pull them through the hole. 10 or even 12 is better if you expect lunkers. Sometimes I see guys chop square holes 2-3 feet on a side for jigging, and they don't bother marking them. Seems pretty dangerous.
