In march i am heading down to the keys to fish, bones seem to be the fish of choice. My local fly shop say crazy charlies size 4, and 6, and gotchas same size. I am wading the flats myself and plan to cast at anything that moves. I am not going with a guide so i was looking for a few other fly ideas, or species ideas .

thanks

Ruoff's flea, then go with a Ruoff's flea, and after that you are on your own. They are in the Orvis catalog. For good wading try Long Key.

Where will you be staying? Where do you plan to fish? You may have a great local flyshop, but better advice should be available with a phone call to a fly shop in the Keys. Is this is your first trip to the Keys? If the answer is yes then there are much more important questions than what fly to employ. There is World Class advice available on this website. (Not from me). I just want to see one of our brothers from the north have a great trip. The Keys are beautiful. The geology is amazing. Wading, though possible is sort of limited. I am so psyched you are doing this on your own without a guide!!!

I have been to the keys a few times before, and have kicked myself each time as the wife is sun bathing, and I WATCH all the other fisherman. I will be camping in key largo, and maybe @ sugarloaf KOA. I realize that wading is very limited, but as a new flyfisher I will be happy to get my line wet. We are going on a budget wich at this time does not allow for a guide. In order to slightly compensate for inexperience I have been searching many websites for both maps, and information on what areas are most accesible.
The owner of my local fly shop is heading for bones in Cuba next week, not for the first time, and I feel as he has made some good suggestions based on my further reseach. This trip i feel may be chalked up to experience ( and a vacation out of the snow) and hopefully will help next year on a return trip.

no fish = no problem if no fish = no snow

Thanks all

It is a hike from Key Largo, but I would recommend that you drive south to mm 74-76ish. Bonefish Bob's in Islamorada will be on the RHS as you drive south. You may want to stop in to get advice or tackle from Bob Berger. Sandy Moret's shop is next door. The Worldwide Sportsman Shop is also in the area. All of these shops will be on the RHS as you drive south. The flat is on the ocean side. Try to catch the low to incoming tide. The tide there is one to one and a hlf hours behind the tide for Alligator Reef. I have had success with a #4 or #2 weedless Merkin.

Here's a decent webpage that has loads of aerial photos of the Florida Keys. Perhaps you can spot or pinpoint some smaller isolated flats for wading.

Good luck with it down there.
