Hi I live in the Providence RI area and I am wondering if there is much freshwater fishing (preferably a river) around that area. Like within an hours drive. I haven't heard much besides the wood river. Maybe you can help me thank you

I fish the Wood River mostly - but in the same area off of Rt. 165 there is the Falls River which has a Fly Only catch and release area. Friends of mine also fish the Moosup River which I believe is in western Coventry out near the CT border. Up off of rt 94 in Foster there is a state maintained/run fishing area that is a river, but I forget the name of it. I think it is in the stretch of 94 between RT 6 and 102, but it could be just north of there, still on 94 but north of 6 instead of south.

If you are going to fish the Wood River, my preferance is for the parts of the river just off of rt165 and/or Blitzkreig Trail.

There are probably other places. Pick up the state abstracts when you get your license and look at the stocked trout waters list (assuming you are looking for trout). That will give you a list of the waters where the state puts trout. That and a map will gove you some places to explore.

Get the "Rhode Island Recreational Fishing & Boating Access Guide". It is a map available from RI DEM / Fish and Wildlife. It lists freshwater access points and saltwater access as well. If you have a canoe or kayak, there's an unbelievable amount of fishing water within an hour of Providence.
