Hi guys, I am going over to Tulum for a couple of weeks and having searched for days on the net I am not much closer to finding a flats guide in the area? I dont expect to generate loads of replies to this post but does anyone know of a guide in the area (boca paila) or do i have to go all the way down to Punta Allen.which i nor my wife want to have to do??
any help would be much appreciated.

The guides at the Boca Paila lodge are available by the day through the lodge. I've seen rates of $350/day (plus tip- $30-$40 is fine, unless you get a slam) which is a single angler/boat and includes lunch (sandwiches I think, but if they give you the option to get lunch at the lodge, take it, Polly's enchiladas verde are orgasmic). I've also heard that you can "freelance" hire the BP guides, but I don't know if that means that you use the guide's "boat" or the lodge's. The lodge has recently upgraded its fleet, and the guides are undoubtedly the best in the northern Sian Kahn area.
Ricky (son) or Polly (mom) Gonzalez are in charge and the general manager was Jose when I was last there. There is a website with an e-mail information form (sorry, but I don't want to post it as they are not a ReelTime sponsor, but it's exactly what you'd think it should be ;) )
Good luck. I'll be there in April, so let me know how it turned out.

I second the suggestion that you check at Boca Paila. The guides are good, and there is probably no place better in the world to score a flats Grand Slam.

A non-fishing spouse would probably enjoy hanging out at the Lodge, although Tulum isn't far away. Stay down for dinner on Mexican night, and have a good time.

I spent a week north of Tulum at a typical vacation resort. Caught a few bones and jacks every morning by simply blind casting.....Talk to Carlos
at the Akumul docks....he has a cafe on the left as you enter....used him once....was "ok".....but did better just walking the beach....blind casting in flats ....so go figure...

well i just got back from my trip. fishing was not so hot. we went one day with a guide and cancled the next. apperantly the bones are not in around cancun this time of year, dispite what carlos said. i was pretty dissapointed to say the least. the guide got me into some tarpon and i bounced all sorts of flied and lures right past them, but no takers. caught a few cuda, and a few nice snappers. but i was bummbed. we saw one snook, and i pointed it out. my fly was in the water, and before i could turn to cast, the guide casted, hooked up, offered me his sloppy seconds and then lost the fish after i refused. i thought that was not too cool.
anywhoo, that is how we learn....

I'd say very uncool.
Which guides and where did you fish? Interested as I'm going down to BP in April. I'd be surprised if this was a BP guide, as I've fished with most, and, while a couple are slightly surly, I'd be shocked if they pulled crap like that.
Sorry for your bad trip. Bad fishing is one thing, but bad guiding just sux!

i just sent a firey letter to the owner of the opperation, i am curious to see if he replies, and how he does.

I fished with a Boca Paila lodge guide a couple of years ago. They are not cheap but they are good. Take your wife with you on the fishing trip. Its pretty good site seeing while you are cruising around the bay looking for fish. Lots of birds and other cool stuff

We stayed at Las Ranitas on the Punta Allen Road south of Tulum. It was a really nice place but again not cheap. Good place for an elegant dinner. Another good place to stay as well as eat is Zamis which is a mile or so North of Las Ranitas. Zamis has great food and a little cheaper.

For fishing without a guide, you can fish the channel that cuts out of the bay to the ocean by Boca Paila. I managed to get one bonefish there while I was waiting for the guide. There are bonefish all up and down the channel but shore access is very limited. If you do venture out on foot, watch your step, there are all sorts of creatures, aquatic and otherwise, that you wouldn't want to encounter by accident.
