Visited the North Beach at Sandy Hook today to show the wife (hey it's Valentine's Day), son and grandson where I like to fish. We walked past the Lookout to end of the Fisherman's Trail and what do I see but a brand new chain link fence extending from the old at the end of the path down to the water. Signs say "US Government Property. DO NOT TRESSPASS. Live ammo firing range." The entire area to the left (west, I guess) of the Fisherman's Path is now off limits. From straight out from the path to the east to the rip is still open. Now that's a bummer! --124-3

ADDENDUM: I just found a rather lengthy thread on this subject on www.stripersurf.com.

Just checked out the thread on stripersurf.. We need to act fast. There is a great letter of protest on that thread. We need to get as many copies of that as possible out local officials. This is NOT acceptable.

This is really a bad sign. We can't let this go without a fight. (#$119)

The link below is a petition to have the fence removed from Sandy Hook. It only takes a second to complete and think its worth your time.

Signatures are starting to add up!! Also heard that the footings have already been exposed by wind and water. What a dumb idea!

Here's the info on the Fence from the Star-Ledger (http://www.nj.com/columns/ledger/ristori/index.ssf?/base/columns-0/1077779965260330.xml)that ran in the Reel-Time NewsWire (http://www.reel-time.com/newswire.php)last week...

Remember folks the fence is just part of the issue. The real issue is access. The C G agreed to remove the fence but was going to keep up the no tresspassing signs. There is word now however that fishermen/women will be allowed access to the Rip. It's not official however till it's in writting. Keep your fingers crossed.

I read on another board that nothing has been announced officially, but that a nod has been given to not having the fence.

The advise, though, was to keep up the petition.

I dont think the taxpayers are footing the bill for this one. I just read the fishing permit for Sandy Hook is twice what it was last year. Twice the price and half the sand?

There is an old saying on the Cape. "If at first you don't succeed try try again" The National Seashore tried to close the beaches here years ago and and did not give up until they did. If Sandy Hood is being managed the way the National Seashore manages the Outer Cape it is only a matter of time and all access will go away.
