I'm headed for Placencia, Belize March 12-15. Booked a place to stay (Luba Hati - anyone know it?), but still working on guides and trying to learn more about the fishing (bonefish, permit, tarpon, snook) opportunities, appropriate gear, etc. Any contacts (local or otherwise) willing to share knowledge would be much appreciated.

I was in placencia last june. I had a great time. stayed at Millers landing and fished with a guide named Egbert. I posted some picts on the www.backwaterhawgs.com website. You will need to click on the link called old forum and hunt through a few pages on teh saltwater link for the placencia link.-Wittich

Give Jim Bender a call over at The Lower Forty in Worcester. Jim is a great guy and has first hand knowledge of that area. He usually fishes Belize every fall. I am sure he can answer questions you have.

I have heard it takes 2 hours to get to the flats from Placencia. Can anyone confirm?

Also, has anyone stayed at Robert's Grove?

Great choice! Tiny peninsula town with lots of fish nearby. Town took a beating from a hurricane a couple of yrs ago and still looked like it. But, many bones, rolling tarpon every day, lots of shots at big permit, bonito cruised the edges, etc. Life was good.
Fished with Wyatt Cabral and his brother Daniel. They are great guides and put us on fish every day, in spite of wind. My buddy (who is an outdoor writer and travels a lot to fish) really likes these guys; he had fished w/Daniel the prior year. Kevin Modera was another choice recommended to us. Wyatt Cabral's web is www.wyattsfishign.com and he was at wyattandcarina@btl.net last yr.
Mary Toy handles most of the rentals in the area and is great to work with. She also will handle the air reservations for a puddle-jumper from Belize Intl. She is at mtoy@destinationsbelize.com and will know Robert's Grove. We just rented a little private one-room house on the beach, cheap.
Bring everything; there are no fishing supplies.
You can be fishing in 20 mins from the docks.
Ned more info, shoot me a private message.

Thanks for the info. We are going to be there April 1st to 10th. We have booked our days fishing with Wyatt Cabral. Can't wait.

We were hoping to stay at Robert's Grove but they are full. From the research I did, Robert's Grove is the nicest place in Placencia. Instead we are staying at the Rum Point Inn. It is suppose to be nice but a little overpriced.

I will give a full report when I get back.

Any restaurants I should look for? Any tours worth doing?

No, it does not take two hours to get to the flats from Placencia, more like 25-30 minutes. Every photo on Wyatt's website was shot within 30 minutes of the dock.

Just to straighten out the spelling of Wyatt's website listed above, it's www.wyattsfishing.com

I think you will be happy fishing with Wyatt, he is one of the most personable guides in the area and his new boat is nice and beamy so as to provide lots of elbow room between the passengers as they lean back and enjoy the ride.

Have a fun trip

This has to be one of the greatest places on earth. I was with my wife there 2 X-mas ago and had an incredible time. We stayed at Roberts Grove which was a beautiful place although for some reason had a problem with the guy that ran the dive/flyfishing shop, he may have had the holiday blues but was not very helpful.

If you do not mid roughing it for a few days I would highly suggest going to Ranguana for a few days, the place was amazing. Just one huge flat 50 minues away via ponga. All self-guided bonefishing, very rustic cabins with no running water. We caught some snapper, dove for lobsters and had an incredible few days totally removed from it all with bonefish and permit right outside the door. I think the booking for the cabins is done through Roberts Grove but I would suggest hooking up with a local for a ride out there as Roberts Grove wanted to charge us quite a bit to get out there.

Also, if you have a chance eat at Merle's right on the beach. She is the greatest lady who basically cooks and serves you out of her kitchen. We got snowed out of Boston and ended up spending Xmas with her and her family....the most fun I have ever had.
