Where is the best flats fishing in Belize for bones, permit, and tarpon? Ambergris Caye? Placencia? I am looking for mostly guided fishing but would love some DIY.
THANKS!
I've only been once, but from when I was researching the topic (permits and bones only):
Bonefish-anywhere. There are plenty of fish-small and dumb. I liked Tuneffe and Glover's reef but that limits DIY fishing.
Permit-southern Belize is the place.
Look at that new lodge in southern Belize. People say good things about it and it's priced right. Blue Horizon maybe?

I just returned from Placencia, I have never been to Ambergris Caye -Placencia is a very nice town, people are great, the fishing was awsome. I hired Wyatt Cabel for 3 days-he is a native of this area, and knows the waters well, and he will get you on the bonefish. To get to the flats you would have to have a boat. Here is his website just in case you happan to hook up with him. http://www.wyattsfishing.com/

I stayed at Tradewinds, which was a great stay, mid priced, there are 6 small cottages, clean, coffee maker, fridge, on the water, walkable to town and eats. I would go back, I do not think they have a web site but if you go to the http://www.belizeforum.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi- this is a great site for getting info on the area as well as fishing.
There are plenty of permit and tarpon, but again you will need a guide, I did not seek permit on this trip. The bones varied in size that we caught, 3 to 5 lbs, that we caught and released, lost a few bigger ones 6 to 7 lbs. Good luck and let me know how you do.
