All:
I just picked up the new Orvis mach IV reel and it's a beaut :brow . I loaded it up with a 10wt shooting head system but also have some perfectly good Rio 9wt line w/ backing I'd like to use as well. My question is, is it worth it to get a second spool ($140) to load up the full line as well as having the shooting heads..I know it'll be up to me ultimately but I was just curious what the board thinks.
Thanks, :-%

Anything you can throw with the full 9wt line system...you can throw with the 10wt shooting head system. Realistically, on the water, are you going to switch back and forth dependant on the fishing conditions at that micro-moment?
Be happy with the reel and 10wt shooting head and whatever fishability it affords you. Once "On the Water", the very second you find yourself swearing under your breath that you should've bought that second spool..."order it when you get home"...not a second sooner unless you've got more disposable income than you know what to do with.
Just my Canadian 0.3cents worth ;^)

I respectfully disagree.
For my 8, 9 & 10 weight rods I use #10 Tiogas with #9 floating, #9 intermediate, #8 intermediate, 325 grain QD, #10 floating.
Whether you're wading or fishing from a boat, when the tide and weather change - you're going to be happy to have the second line to change to.
Just my $.02.
Best of luck,

i'm with Henry, if you have a shooting head system, with interchangeable heads, why spend $140 on a spool to hold a line that you also have (or can simulate) in the shooting head system?
I have 2 spare spools that I carry, but honsetly can't remember when I actually switched lines on the water...so as common sense would dictate I will contiue to carry them, even though I will probably never swap out the original line I planned to use for the trip.

I think line changing is needed more from a boat than from shore fishing,
conditions don't typically change that much shore fishing. fishing from a boat you can go from a surface blitz, to a rip where you want to get as deep as possible. how much time are
you willing to spend changing lines? i can spend a fair amount of time before i hit
the $140 mark. but, there have been times where an extra spool would have been
really nice also. being the cheapskate that i am, i too would wait until i felt i couldn't
live without it before i spent that kind of money on a spare.
my 1.5 cents

Sniper, did you compare the Mach against the Litespeed and the Velocity? I'm curious what you thought since i'm in the market for one of the three.

Maybe i misread the question. Cant you just use a loop 2 loop connection and use either? I mean obviously you cant change on the water, but if you think you know where, and what you r doing on a given day, couldnt you switch up b4 heading out? Obviously any fisherman loves a new toy, even if you never use it, but if it is a budget question you can still use your 9 if you loop it. This is my understanding. If I am wrong please correct me for my knowledge aswell.
You know what - I misread the question.
$140 is some significant $$ for a spare spool. In your situation, I would invest in the interchangeable head system.
Changing lines on the the water is easy, been doing it for more years than I want to admit to.
As far as the issue of boat vs. wading. I think they're the same. Of course I have rods on my boat rigged with different lines & flys but from the beach I can go from fishing a deep rip to flats to still water. Good luck doing that successfully with only one line.
Good luck,

All:
Thanks for the advice...I think I'm gonna hold off on the spare spool for now (my wife will be happy to hear that) gonna use just the shooting heads for the time being , I can always get a spool if I need it easy enough....
Joe,
I checked out all three but liked the Orvis reel the best, I especially liked the drag and backing capacity plus Orvis customer service speaks for itself. Check it out it's definitely worth a look

I've got a Litespeed that performs very well. And, they honor the warranty big time. Either way, you're getting a quality reel from Lamson. Can't comment on Orvis except they generally are pretty expensive; you can usually find similar or better quality for less.
