OK, so everyones been busy tying their fingers off ( literally - zap a gap and goop doing a number on my finger tips ), I was wondering what fly will be first out of the fly box. For me every time I tie a nice looking fly, I say " that's the one I'm going to use ", but then I tie another pattern, and that one becomes the fly I'll tie on first, so I was just wondering - who's 1st

I have been tying alot of gurglers, I love that fly. That will probably be the first one I take out.

Although I tell myself every year, "Try this one first...", I usually end up tying on a chartreuse and white or an olive and white clouser as the initial fly. They really work well around these parts. It's hard to argue with success! :)

I have yo agree with Tyguy. The first fly out of my box is a chartreuse/white or yellow very sparse. If not that an Olive/white.

Also, Joe Bruce's crab colored clouser works well, which is white bucktail belly, tan bucktail top wing with a wisp of olive on the very top, and a bright orange or red thread for the nose.

He ties his with all the body materials, except the barbell, on the top side of the hook shank (top meaning hook point up of course). He does this for durability, because when the fly is being dragged across a sandy bottom, it has a tendency to get its hairs shredded. I've found that if I tie mine in the traditional fashion - belly wing on the dumbell side and top wing on top - then coat the head and eyes with epoxy, the durability is excellent.

I will hit the water the last week of Apirl. If there are herring then it will be a big herring pattern. Depends what's in the water.

The little bass which arrive 1st will be on small bait, so a 3" olive over white clouser is my choice. When the herring show along with slightly bigger bass, I switch to herring flies. This lasts until the end of June.

same here with olive over white, mix with yellow over white and same size about 3". Use deceiver style with IS line in lieu of clouser. And pray. (#$120)
