A[pparently Orvis is having a "tent" sale this weekend in CT. Last time I was at one of these I wasn't a fly fisherman ( and I have serious doubts as to whether I'm one yet) but they have a bunch of equipment there at good prices. A lot of Reddington stuff as I recall.

Any of it worth taking a trip to Westport?

Thanks, Rob

The real question is whether or not there's ever anything good at an Orvis sale? I'm kidding. I know that crack'n on someone's gear is almost as bad as on their boat.

I never particularly cared for their rods or reels, but I do check them out on occassion for tying materials. Their stores usually have a great selection of stuff.

They sell "greenies", which my dogs LOVE!

My dogs love Greenies too! Unfortunately they both devour the largest size Greenie inside of two minutes, I've timed them. I get them through my in-law's business at a discount and they're still not cheap, especially considering how fast my dogs go through them.

I'm not really a huge fan of alot of their equipment either, but some of their rods (particularly their T3's, tridents, and superfine) are actually quite nice for their intended purpose. I LOVE their Wonderline fly lines, they're made by Scientific Anglers, but then orvis puts on the "Wonder" stuff at their facilities.. I like 'em a lot, so I would recommend them to anyone. Alot of their gadgets are made oversees and of poor quality (the stream thermometer I got from them is 6 degrees off, and their Zingers lasted me exactly 2 uses), but if it's cheap, why not. If it was me, and I was near it, I would at least go, they have some nice stuff.

I have a 7'6" 3wt that I LOVE.

Orvis Superfines have a nice slow parabolic "feel" that is quite nice for shortish cast in smallish streams. Think tumbling Vermont streams, White River and tribs, 'Kill, Ottaqueechee etc. 14" Trout.

I think there are better values for SW stuff but I have heard raves about their Tridents.

Tippet material is good. Lines are good. Asst Do-dads are good if they are a deal.

The clothing can be pretty good. I'd be looking for Sweaters & Jackets or a Barbour coat for walking around.

TOOFLY, What kind of dogs are those?

PeteV,

My dogs are American Pit Bull Terriers. (#$118)

They get about the worst rap of any dog in the US. Both stupid, idiotic dog owners and the media(stupid too at times) contribute to that. It's true that they are not the dog for everyone, but they're still just dogs. The majority of people who have a negative opinion on the breed, know not what they speak of. Most of them wouldn't even recognize one if it ran up and bit 'em. :brow ;)

Anyway, they're just dogs. Like many other things, they're a product of their environment and how they're raised/socialized.

I had a white bull terrier growing up that looked like the one on "The incredible Journey" . it looked like a musclebound cartoon character dog. it was pretty cool, I was really little (4/5/6) and use to pull it by the tail when it would try to eat the frogs we caught. That thing was a lot of fun. Only Problem I can remember was when other dogs would try to pick a fight with it...although they don't pick the fights, they tend not to back down from one.
This is the latest pest we picked up....at least this guy doesn't eat the things the kids catch.... Kid dogs get put through a lot. Toofly, your dogs bring back some nice memories. Thanks for sharing.

Pauper,

I have their 7'6 4wt "brook trout" Superfine that I love for small brushy streams.. makes a 10" fish feel like a beast.. just a really fun rod, and tough to find something like it from other companies.. very specialized. I liked the old finish more than the new way they're doing 'em now, the new superfines are pretty.. I kind of liked the ugly way.. don't really know why! (#$119)

I love that second pic! That's hillarious!

My wife and I both love Bernese Mountain dogs. She gets to work with quite a few of them at her parent's veterinary hospital. They're very even-tempered, typically easy to work with and great with children.

The reason that you're white Bull Terrier would not back down was because of its blood and breed history. Many of the Terriers of old were sentry, hunting, and yes, fighting dogs. Though I don't condone dog fighting, I do understand that that's the reason why many of the Terriers today have that game attitude.

I looked at so many breeds before getting these two guys, from pugs to Neopolitan Mastiffs. At first I was put-off by the Pit Bull's persona in the media (which sells papers and brings ratings), but immediately fell in love with them in person. Many close friends and family were concerned with the idea of "one of those devil dogs." (#$119) Even my mother's lawyer, who was the greatest opponent and is like a father in may ways to me, now loves them. He gets on the floor and wrestles with them, has them do tricks, etc. It's great to see people's attitudes and opinions change with just one meeting of my dogs.

Because my dogs are so easy to work on, they involuntarily :brow get to donate their time, bodies and blood for the betterment of medicine. Pit Bulls by nature and breeding, have a high threshold for pain and abuse, which is why they're great with children. My wife will sometimes bring them into work to donate blood or to be guinea pigs for demostrating procedures and equipment. Soon Sonja, the red one, will get to test out the new ultra-sound machine. I'm sure she's thrilled... --125-3

Thank you too.
