Hey guys,

I have a 9/10 redington brakewater on my 9wt TiCR, I love the reel, and want to get a 12wt TiCr and was thinking that the 9/10 is beefy enough to handle 12wt duties. I know if I put gel-spun I could get 300yds with 12wt line easy and the reel has 9lbs of drag. The reel is pretty heavy, 9.8oz so it would balance nicely with a 12wt rod.

So what are peoples thoughts? The only reason I am considering it is because I can't afford a new reel, and already have a few extra spools.

Thanks,

Josh

What species are you going to be using the 12wt for? Reason I ask...is if it's for bluewater fishing where you could run into some long running fish, you still might have enough backing but your retrieve rate on the reel would'nt be up to snuff.

Just my 0.3cents (Canadian)

I was thinking medium sized tuniods and big stripers in the NE, and maybe small tarpon, permit, etc somewhere in the Caribbean (Dad is thinking of one last family vacation before we head off to the four corners of the globe)

the diameter on the 9/10 is 3.75" and I think I could get 300yds of gel on it with 12wt line, giving it large diameter, right now I have 9wt line with 300yds of dacron line and there is 1/2" of spool still showing....maybe I should spool on a shops set ups to see how much I can get on it.

Personally I think for tunoids and larger fish a spool diameter of at least 4" is the way to go.

If you want to gather enough support here to justify to your better half the need for another reel, then put my name down in the you should get another reel category! Will your present brakewater reel work for you? Of course it will, the brakewaters are reel workhorses and I don't think the drag will be an issue. A larger arbour might be nice for the reasons already given by the other posters, but for now, if cost is the issue, I'd use the present reel and save my sheckles and /or earn some new brownie points for a new reel purchase somewhere down the road.

You will be under reeled and gelspun backing will cut into your fingers especially when you are under reeled. Get a good deal on an Islander on Ebay. They are great reals at half the price of a Tibor or Abel.

That reel will be fine for all the species you mention. The real question is why a 12# rod for any of them? Unless by "tunoids" you mean real tuna--say football sized BFTs--nothing you mentioned will require anything beyond a 10#.
