Anyone heard when they are starting? I'm figuring next week they'll start for the lower and mid-Cape, moving towards third week in March for Greater Boston area north. They may start sooner through the ice.

I also heard a rumor that at least some of the broodstock salmon they were going to plant in January probably won't go in until the trout stocking starts.

They haven't updated the stocking report site:

http://www.state.ma.us/dfwele/dfw/dfwtrout.htm

since last June. But with the budget problems I am sure they are little understaffed.

A friend phoned me today, and metioned Joe Michneiwicz (Worc telegram) did his piece on Ma trout stockings.
My friend "claims" that some stockings will be delayed until it is determined if the amount of PCB in the trout and salmon is determined to be with safe levels.
I do have today's Worc Telegram at work, but I never got to read it. But apparently the food fed to the brood salmon harbors PCb's which have now been passed along to the salmon. This is basically the same food fed to the trout. So, the fish must now be tested to see just where the PCB levels stand.
I tried to access the article via the web, but you must be a subscriber, which I'm not.

This sounds like another one of those "tip of the iceberg" issues. I sure hope this doesn't jeapordize an entire years stock of hatchery trout which were raised with sportsmen $$$....

I realize this was a Pa study, but I'll bet we use the same food here in Ma too.

If it's true the catch and release streams should get a bonanza stocking.

Saw a MW guy taking a water sample in a still frozen pond at a a stream inlet this morning. Must be getting close.

PCBs in commercial trout food...nice. What is next, asbestos in baby formula? Where are we buying this stuff from?

Actually I'm pretty sure this is industry standard in all "developed" countries. The bulk of hatchery food is vacuumed off the ocean floor and consists of forage fish and other random stuff. This essentially turns all hatchery fish into bottom feeders. Oh yeah and the unsafe baby formulae we produce here actually get sold to places like Pakistan and China, but don't get me started on that.

Mike, You're obsessed. You must remain calm.

"Tiny water drops carve mighty canyons."

As Kevin Bacon said at the end of "Animal House": "All is well!"

Anyway, I saw him in Sterling/Spencer taking a sample from the little channel that flows from Wach reservoir into the pond across 140.

This is the same general area as Quinne, Stillwater, and a few other "secret" brooks.

Hang in there!

What? People eat fish?

Man, that can't be healthy. Where's my big mac?

Saw another DFW truck up here testing acidity levels in a local pond, so it won't be long. A lot of ice went away up here over the past few days, although still a lot out in the middle. The problem now is getting to the middle and back safely!I wouldn't recommend it. (#$119)

That post was satyrical genious! A witty reparte to Mr. BSB's post.

I even apologized.....in Latin.

Commercial trout/salmon chow contains some fish protein and fish oil. In the US most of these products are derrived from menhaden. PCBs are fat soluble. The origin of the PCBs in the diet is most likely from the menhaden oil. Kinda ironic that farmed trout and salmon contain PCBs from consuming the same food that contributes to elevated PCB levels in striped bass and bluefish.

I find it very ironic that farm raised salmon and trout are suddenly unsafe to eat due to the feed they are being fed,and who supplies the commercial feed?why its the commercial fishing industry.
