i picked up a new mach v about a week ago. nice reel, accept it could use an aluminum drag adjustment knob. i'm in the market for an 11wt. rod to cast some huge flies to some huge cows 20' deep up here in RI come august. does anybody have any suggestions? i'm hoping my mach's a good match for it after i load w/ 35 lb spectra and maybe some airflo xtra fast sinking line. as for flies, i'm gonna start tying some that are 14" +... i can't wait till some fish show off the beaches...

11's are a little hard to come-by as many manufacturers jump from 10 up to 12. I have a T & T Vector 11-weight that I absolutely love. Nice progressive action and very light in the hand.

If sinking lines and big flies are the primary goal, I'd look for a shop that is still selling off some discontinued RPLXi's - their relatively slow action works well with heavy sinking lines.

For a more general purpose rod, there are countless options depending on how fast an action you like. I have found that the 12wt Cross Current (loomis) rods work well throwing big flies on sinking lines, as do many other brands.

Cast a few before you pull out your wallet :)

14" is a big fly, if you plan to toss those all day, I'd be looking to go heavier than an 11wt. Just my take on it though.

Although not listed through American sources...TFO "Temple Fork Outfitters" does indeed manufacture an 11wt fast action flyrod in Canada. It's available through "Springbrook". You can view details/prices(CAN) and rod spec's at...

I have TFO's 7wt and am very impressed...and have only heard great things about their 10 and 12wts...might be the economical way to go.

Good luck,

Rhodyflyguy,
I am a big fan of 11wt. rods, I have a Powell AXS 11wt. and a Sage RPLX 11wt (faster than the rplxi). they have handled everything from fall run Stripers and big albies to a 60# BFT. They do make throwing BIG flies easier on Heavy lines, I usually match an airflo 500gr. depth charge on my 11wt. If you can find a Powell AXS 11 or the sage RPLX either will be a work horse for you.......... Cast as many different rods as you can and buy the one that feels best in your hand.
