Pardon the lousy pun, but I just started tying my own flies and and am having a blast! --127-3-
Now I see why you guys tie your own.

I took a tying class with Bob Thunberg at the Lower Forty recently. Great teacher. Tied four trout patterns, which gave me the basics that I needed, then Jim set me up with a modest selection of materials to tie saltwater patterns.

Below is a pic of the second fly I've ever tied outside of the class, a squid based largely on Shaun Ruge's pattern but with a couple of minor substitutions and modifications. Thanks Shaun. (The first fly I tied was a deciever, but I kind of tied it, um, upside-down. Chartreuse on the bottom, white on the top. )

Anyway, after I get a little more practice under my belt I might start trying to elbow my way into a fly swap or two!

Trout patterns give you more than enough skills needed for saltwater. My first class was trout and salmon flies. I am glad I took that instead of an introductory saltwater class. Knowing how to handle and use the materials is half the battle.

Ditto, I just started in the last 3 months. Having a ball and am really looking forward to learning more, will enjoy the Wilmington FF show twice as much (wiil probably cost twice as much!). Really thought I wouldn't like it, too "arts n crafts"-WRONG.

Eddy, nice fly! I started with trout flies too. The great thing about tying striper flies is with just a little modification, you have some really productive smallmouth bass or other freshwater flies. Keep up the good work.

Thanks for the encouragement guys! Gotta get some more tying in before the stocking here in the central region starts.
