View Full Version : Yet Another Spool!!!
I just picked up another spool for my LA Tioga #8 reel. That brings me up to something like 8 spools and 3 frames. This one is filled with 150 yards of 20# backing and Cortland 555 200 grain sinking line. Got it at the Bears Den. $140 for the spool and line. This is one of the reasons why I like these reels so much.
I took at look at a Bauer reel for a Tuna setup I'm thinking about putting together. Great reel, but my CC cracked just thinking about it.

Do you have duplicate set ups? Or do you just have every grain line on the market? I just picked up my second for my Teton 9-11 cost me $70 brand new. Can't beat these reels.

[QUOTE=Ray]That brings me up to something like 8 spools and 3 frames. QUOTE]
Ray,
Dude, you gotta fill me in on why in the world you would have 3 reels all the same size and 8 (yes 8, did you say 8, thought I read 8?!?!?!) spools for those reels.
Does not make sense to me. That is basically 2-3 spools per reel. You can never fish more than one reel at a time. Carry along maybe 2 extra spools but what are you doing with the other 5?!?!?! Even if you are a nice guy who brings along two friends to fish (using all 3 reels) each of them gets a reel and 2-3 extra spools?!?!?!?
Sounds inefficient and expensive to me. I can see 2 or even 3 spools but after that you should be using something to swap lines quickly and easily from spool to spool (or reel to storage to reel for lines not in use).

With nearly 1,600 posts, I am sure Ray will answer for himself. That said, I guess I can easily see how one ends up with 8 spools. Used to be you went into a shop and they had a couple of line choices for you. Today, the choices are myriad. You've got floaters, cold water floaters, warm water floaters, similarly with intermediates, you have striper tapers and bonefish tapers and if you take the reel to fresh water add salmon/steelhead tapers and bass tapers. Then there are multi-tip and multi-head lines and on and on. Seems to me that we made this line thing pretty complicated.
Now if you accept that there are differences between lines (I'm gullible, I believe) and fish a couple of different weight lines for several different species, 8 spools or 10 spools or whatever can become very real, very easily. I don't know Ray and his reasons may be very different but I'm telling you how I could easily get to 8 spools.
Have I? No, at least not yet. But I did just buy a new Gilmore reel. There were several reasons for the selection but one of them was the fact that spools for this $450 reel are $99 each. I started out with a standard and a large arbor spool for 9wt. and 8wt. intermediate lines - my go to lines for fishing from the beach. But already (I've had the reel for three days) I'm thinking about picking up additional spools - maybe one to accomodate a 10wt line, maybe another for a multi-head system, and another for a salmon taper for my next trip to the Miramichi...Oh my God that's five already... and its only been three days. Just think what I can do with a week to think about it.

Let's start with my Mantra: I too am a gear junkie!
After only 3 years of FF I have about 6 reels and at least one extra spool for each of them. Instead of spending a fortune on 3 or more extra spools for each reel I simply manage my lines more efficiently (most of my reels are Islanders at $220/spool). I have Coldwater and Tropic lines. I have Floaters, Sinkers, Lead Core and Intermediates for Stripers, tarpon, bones etc. about 15 lines all together.
I carry one exrtra spool usually and then I carry a spare line on a Rio Line Winder box. If I actually need a third line then I have it all set to go on the Rio Line Winder box. These are small, lightweight, easy to carry and only about $9 each. It takes only about 6 or 7 minutes ON THE WATER to remove a line from one reel and put on a new line with with this system. I have much better things to do with my $$$ than drop $140 - $220 for extra spools. I also feel 2-3 extra spools are heavy and take up a lot of space in my vest or fishing pack...
Note:
My understanding of the original post was Ray had 8 spools for one reel (8wgt). If you have 8 spools for 3, 4, 5 or more reels than I think that is fine, actually very normal and NOT ridiculous...but 8 spools for one Reel, hmmmmmmmmmmmm. I think it may be a new disease called "SPOOL ENVY"
just my $0.02
Each spool has a purpuse;
1- #4 with 4w floating line for trout
1- #8 LA with 8w clear int line for the flats
1- #8 LA with 9w amber int line
1- #8 LA with 200gr line for the flats
1- #8 LA with 7w clear int line for the flats
1- #10 SA with 9w int line & 250 yards of backing for Bones and Albies
1- #10 SA with 9w floating line & 250 yards of backing for Bonefish
1- #10 SA with 400gr line & 250 yards of backing for deep water and boat use
That's 3 frames and 8 spools. Covers just about all my needs. I will be getting another spool or two for my 10w too. At an average of $55 per spool, it's easy to have many line types and weights available.

I just picked up the Rio Striper versiTip line @ bears den. The lines expensive, but alot less than buying extra spools, with the 4 different tips, it should cover all the water I want to fish

Hi guys,
If you have so many fly lines, you should check out the Smart Spooler line winder. It offer a great solution to clean and store your lines. It's so fast, you can easily remove all yor backing for a good wash down after a trip in saltwater. Check it out at www.smartfisher.com

Only 8 spools and 3 frames?
Am I the only guy that likes to have at least three fly rods set up set up when I'm on my boat? Usually they are a mix of 8s and 10s with floating, clear intermediate and a shooting head system.
When I'm on a boat I like to have 2 fly rods rigged. 1 with a heavy sinking line, and a second with an intermediate line. I like to have a light spin rod ready too.
