Headed up last weekend with a fresh news of the dam cutting the flow from 1400 cfs down to 900. Flow wasn't the problem. It was colder 'n a witch's t*t and there just wasn't much fish movement. Though a few spin guys landed 2 steelhead and one beautiful brown(maybe 10 lbs. and bright and fat), my buddy and I only managed to hook into one steelhead(which broke him off). I actually took a little swim and then later snapped the tip off my 8wt. while de-icing my guide so all in all had a rough rookie day on the Salmon. Nice water though and the weather kept the angler #s down.
Sat. night was in the teens and there was a fair amount of ice on the river Sunday AM. We waited for it to warm up a little and got on the river around 10 AM. Air temp had warmed all the way up to 38F by then but there was still ice all over the sides of the pools in places. My buddy finally hooked into a fish and landed a nice 21" brown(not as bright as the one the day before) but the skunk was off our backs. We had to trek back to Mass so left around 3:30. My buddy's Dad stayed and fished Monday and hooked 4 and landed 2(one 4 lb. brown and one 5 lb. steelhead). I guess one of the steelhead was a big boy that just ripped him upstream into a big rapid and snapped him off. I guess that little warm spell was enough to turn the fish on a little better. We primarily fished the lower section of the river down towards the Lake. The very lowest section was closed due to ice. Hope to head back up there before the bass are here...

Ralph runs the place and is a hoot(transplanted Mass boy). It's right on the river and it was only $28/night. He did say the last couple of weeks in April were booked pretty solid. It's about a 5 and change hour drive from Boston fyi, almost all highway too. Here is a good shop/website for updated info. on water flow, fishing etc... - www.whitakers.com
Nice guys there too if you want to give them a shout. Good luck.

Hey ChuckD, I know if you want to fish the salmon rivers in New Brunswick,or Nova Scotia you have to hire a local guide,is it also required on these rivers in N.Y.? Or is it just a matter of going into a shop like Whitakers and have them point you in the right direction? Thanks in advance.

thanks for the report i usualy try to fish at least once amonth on the Salmon & the Sandys. this winter i have been so busy with the selling of the boat and the rigging of the new one. Also my wife decided we were going to remodel the upstairs. I havent been able to get up there since Dec.
I really like the higher water I seem to do pretty well when its fro 750 to 1000. Thanks for the report maybe well see you up there. I have been staying at Melinda's the past few times its only 21$ a night and its right on the river as well. Good luck
