Sentience

I had the afternoon off, so I couldn't resist getting out there and casting a bit. First I drove by Walden, then Whites and then up to the Nissittisset.

I am not sure why I didn't end up fishing at Walden Pond. As far as I could see there was no one there and I read on the MassWildlife site that they had stocked there. The wind was mostly from the East so there were pockets of shettled water on the south side. It did look a little breezy I guess.

So I drove to Whites Pond just to look and there were a lot of cars in the lot. I'd say there were at least 8 fishermen in the little area of the beach and by the parking lot. No fly fishing, mostly bait with bobbers. One guy had caught a 14" rainbow that day or so he said.

I knew that they probably hadn't stocked the Nissittisset yet but I couldn't resist. I wasn't alone in that I saw three other fly fishermen in the catch and release section. I didn't see any fish though. One guy I talked with said that he never saw any there until stocking, but we agreed that it is always suggested that there are holdovers.

It was warm enough to spark some activity as far as the bugs went. There was a little hatch of black stoneflies - big enough to attract a fish's attention if they were there and not comotose. I saw some midges and a few blue winged olive type flies.

I worked the rust out in some of the more open areas and thought of fish I had caught in certain spots and then fished them like would otherwise. It was fun, I can't wait until the fish show up.

And I really can't wait until the stripers show up.

Thanks for the post,

I haven't fished the Nissitisit (or the Squanacook) Since the mid 70's. I've been meaning to go back and enjoy the river. But just never get to it.

Walden always has a few fish and the nice part about it is that with the high Banks you can always find a spot sheltered from the wind. I think I better get out and give it a try. I always liked wading the Nissitissit. Next warm spell I may head up and try it.

i've been fishing the stream that goes into horn pond for over 25 years the're some really big trout and salmon in there the're 2 streams that feed into it they join across from the fire house off pleasant st in woburn. it's togh fishing later with a fly rod because of the overhanging brush but now is a good time to fish it use wooly buggers with a little crystal flash and fish them like a piece of worm really slow.. the're salmon brown rainbow some native brookies and the ever elusive leopard trout which is a reverse cross of a tiger trout . the brooks go for miles and you are fishing behind some peoples back yards. but as long as you stay in the brook your ok pleaserelease any brookies and hybrids you catch good luck vinnie the mackeral
