Still looking for any info out there on offshore fly-fishing in Barbados. I will be down there for a wedding in early May and am looking for advice. I have spoken with a few Captains who said it is up to me how I want the baits rigged(hookless so I can tease in the billfish, etc...) but I wonder if any Captains are better than others.
Thank you for any rec's/info you can give me. -Chuck

We fished with Capt. Jackson on Idyll Time(a nice 42 foot Hatteras). Got on the boat at 7AM and headed out into a stiff 20 knot breeze. As we headed east it started to get snotty, but as many of you have experienced, the fish sometimes like the nasty weather and sticking it out can pay off. After 3 good hits and no hookups in the first hour and 1/2, 3 out of the 6 of us were looking green and one other was dying from the diesel fumes. Seas were 5-7 and building, especially as we continued East. So we turned around to drop off 4 out of the 6 of us. Me and my buddy Scot hopped back on and back out to the same spot we had just left. The captain was on the radio with another boat who had got into the fish pretty good, so good that they had filled the fish box with wahoo and a few dorado and were headed back in. Hopefully there were a few fish left for us. Through the heavy seas I could make out a large slick near where the other boat had been. Sure enough two out of the 4 trolling rods went off on our first pass and we were soon boating a couple of nice wahoo in the 15 lb. range. Ended up being hot like that for the next 1/2 hour-45 min. during which we landed a total of 6 wahoo up to 30 lbs.
Too bad we had left earlier because apparently we had caught the tail end of a very major bluewater feed. I had brought the 10 and 12 weights but it was just too rough plus the action was over before I could even think about it. Ended up having enough fish to feed my buddy's wedding which was a nice treat and believe me when I say the Mount Gay rum punch does taste that much better from the home island.
Threw the fly from shore every evening hoping for anything but got the skunk in 4 days of it. While snorkeling I saw pompano, some kind of drum, snapper, jacks and blue runners all in casting range from shore but I guess luck just wasn't with me. I also snorkeled out to around 25 feet of water where they had daily feeding of about 20 loggerhead or hawksbill(not sure which) turtles. Of course this brought in plenty of jacks and some blue runners and then one day I saw some 40-60 lb. tarpon in singles and pairs cruising the bottom. I think they were looking for scraps. Good to know they are there anyway. :-%
