Went down to the Wolfeboro town docks this AM. Not to fish but just look around. While I was there two nice rainbows were taken by a plastic bait guy and a gal. 16 inch plus, both beautiful fish in good shape, both were released. --127-3-
Talk has it that opening day has been the best day so far. The ice is about 20 yards out from the docks only one boat out and about. The river is flowing and a little dark with the recent rain.

How is the ice up there--going out anytime soon? I plan on making a salmon trip up there sometime this month.

Slappy,
I'd plan on the last week of April if your coming up. The ice is a little later than last year and the salmon bite wasn't on hard until the second week of May. The recent rain is bringing fish into the rivers, but the lake turns on later. Unless the weather warms sooner. :)

I am hoping the ice will go out over the next week--any reports for us?

I plan to make a weekday trip to Winni. Not really sure where--either merideth or alton. Bringing the yak and paddling and casting. I wanted to stop and get smelt on the way, but would also like to get up there very early.

I am coming up from Boston and would like to take the shortest route. Any suggestions? (and where to park when I get to your suggested spot?)

Let's see now IMHO,
I would head to Alton Bay. Shortest distance from Boston. 2-2 1/2 hours from down town Boston, depending on the time of day.
There is a small public parking lot up from marinia @ bridge, (bait/tackle/ smelt).
Directions: I-95 to Portsmouth,NH/ RT 16 (Spaulding Turnpike) north toward the White Mountains,/ Rt 11 North (exit 15 ?) to Alton Circle, /RT 28 North toward Wolfeboro,/ RT 11A (left turn) down to Alton Bay.
Launch across the street from public parking, short carry.
Ice was still in yeaterday, althought I bet its out tomorrow. Fish are very big this year, Haven't fished yet myself, working on my boat. The ones I've seen taken were 20"-24" fish, when stopping by to check out the Wolfeboro Docks crowd.
Tight Lines, Slappy.

:-% I stopped at the Wolfeboro Town docks to get an hour of fishing in for the first time this year. Not many anglers, a large ice pack had been blown into the bay with small chunks flowing out along the wall when caught by the current at the bridge. Hot and cold breezes were blowing depending on the wind direction, about 30 degrees temp change coming off the lake or the shore.
How I do? Fish are in the river, had several follows on a golden demon. Switched to a gray ghost and nailed a short that was all over the place with its acrobatic jumps. Released him and called it a night as it was dark after the release.
