Well,
I had most of the day to myself on sat and took advantage. I treked out to Waschusett res. This is the first time I have ever fished it so I made a B line to a bait shop to see what info I could gather. As I enter the bait shop I hold the door for this woman who just happens to be holding a 9 1/2 pound 37 inch laker.. --127-3- I proceed to get a dozen shiners and a few kastmaster lures. then I proceed to pick a few brains..I must say the locals aren't to nasty, they point me in an ok direction.. Luckily I had read On The Water to get some info on this place, and settled down by the wildlife headquarters. (gate 23?) and on my third cast I got a 4 pond laker on a kastmaster..woohoo the only bad thing is that was the only fish in 4 hours of fishing in west boylston..
sunday after a morning with the girl.. I manage to sneak out for an early evening jaunt since we now have some more sunlight I hit one of the local stoked ponds and proceeded to get rainbow after rainbow on small spinners and powerbait..as soon as the other guys left I managed to get 2 more on my fly on and a nymph.. --127-3- the biggest rainbow was 18 inches..

all and all
a good weekend..

Those are pretty good lakers for that place. Wachusett seems to have a lot of 2-3 lb lakers, at least in the last few years (fishing pressure?).

Fishing was pretty good on lower Cape as well for bathtub trout. On one pond I must have caught 15 brookies in a row on metal and flies. They probably stocked them Friday. A couple on 1.5 lbers in the mix.

I too tried Wachusett for the first time on Sunday. Lots of rain but it is a great looking peace of water. I also read the On The Water article and went up loaded with all kinds of tackel. Spoons, shinners, and of course Kast Masters. After using about a dozen shinners with no luck the good old Kast Master did the trick. 3 good size rainbows near the dam. Made for a long day though. Got thoughs fish at about 9am and not another bite till I left at 3:30.
Long day but great to check out this new for me peace of water. I will return there soon.

to manage them. As the ranger told me last time I was there, don't put the slot fish back. He even suggested a nice bush to throw them in.

He said that if the numbers of small fish weren't culled, we wouldn't get the bigger ones.

I fished the cape ponds on sunday too. The sun even came out around 1:30. Caught a lot of nice fish at the 4 ponds I stopped by. Saw a couple of Osprey nail nice trout, one at Hoxie and one at Mashpee-Wakeby. Saw one very large smallmouth at Grews just swimming along very slowly on top of the water not interested in anything.
Good day out overall.

I doubt it's open yet, but another great one to hit for lakers and salmon is Quabbin. We used to walk in the gate that's closest to the West Branch of the Swift inlet and bottom fish with shiners from shore. It's a LONG hike in (at least a mile), but you feel like you are out in the middle of nowhere. It can be tough from shore when the water is high and there are also snags to contend with, but there are some huge lakers in there. One spring, we went in on opening day and I caught an 8 lb laker and several 2-3 lb salmon plus some bass. The guy fishing next to me caught a 17.5 lb laker, biggest one I've ever seen  . Other springs, I've gotten skunked on opening day there, so no guarantees. Best laker/salmon fishing seems to be in May & June, right smack in the middle of the big stripers arrival, so I haven't been out there lately.

The big reserviors can be tough, especially your first time out. Lakers seem to be pretty hit or miss.

I had little time and had to stay local. Fished the Charles on sunday am--the "brown trout" were hitting the DelMonte yellow power bait. About 15 fish most between 5-8lbs big fish were 10.9 and 14.4 on the digital hand scale. The fish were very sluggish and picky--I had to hold the rod and set the hook as soon as they bit, otherwise they spit it out.
