View Full Version : Are the Squannacook and Nissitissit rivers fishable???
I just came back form a week in Europe and understand that we got quite some rain over here. Do you know if the Squannacook and Nissitissit rivers are fishable? Maybe I should just hit the greater Boston ponds? Hum

Pax,
I hit the Squannacook at the Old Meeting House Road site this past Friday night. The water was un-wadable and the only sign of life I saw was a beaver swimming around. I think it will be ponds for another week
Got out for a few hours Sunday morning. Fished the upper section in Townsend. Water was not too high. Did some exploring quite a ways up the river. Did not see any trout. Saw a few spawning suckers. A lot of bugs coming off the water though.
I could not resist and tried the Squannacook on Saturday. It was fishable. I did not hook but it was fishable. Water level and clarity was OK and I even saw a few trout. Plenty of midges, some stone flies and a very few mayflies but no fish rising to them. Tried a variety of streamers and nymphs to no avail. If we could avoid major deluge things will improve very soon. :)

I fished a different Central MA river Sunday and found some nice fish at the tail of a favorite pool. Six fish, all respectable, a couple around 18". All sitting down low and taking an occasional dig in the gravel. I started out with nymphs, practically bounced a few off their noses. Fish didn't even blink. Tried assorted streamers, no go. Finally out of desperation I tied on a smallish caddis (saw a few of what I guess were Little Black Caddis, but I'm lousy at identification). Nothing.
I've never been so frustrated. At least not while fishing ;) .
