View Full Version : Help with baitfish ID...

I netted some of these baitfish mixed in with the schools of spearing locally in the port chester/byram area. Any idea what it is? Doesn't seem like a baby bunker to me, so I'm thinking maybe in the herring family. Any help would be great. Thanks.

alewife- a herring nonetheless but as far as I can see not blueback as this ones eye is much bigger. check this out http://fish.dnr.cornell.edu/nyfish/Clupeidae/alewife.html
we have em thick in Jamaica Bay right now and the bass sure don't care what their name is!!!!!

The image you linked to is an adult, not a juvenile. Here is an image of a juvenile blue back supplied by the Maryland DEC. It nearly looks identical.

Now we know what it is. The follow up question should be, how can I mimic it? And are the stripers eating it?....They sure look good to me.

Prob is a mini Alewife would look identicle as well.

They don't look alike at the juvenile stage. Here's a juvenile alewife:
