During the summer I shoot out to the hudson canyon with my dad, we see alot of small to medium sized mahi-mahi. I have a orvis trident tls rod 11wt., and a 12 wt tioga reel. I know I cant handle the tuna with that set up but I was windering if I can handle the mahi-mahi. I was also looking for some fly patterns the mahi-mahi might hit.

Also, for more info try doing a search for Mahi on the NE board. You will hit a bunch of reports and suggestions from last season.

The fast answer, from reports from last season. 12 wt is more than enough.

Hi there. Last year I fished an 8wt outfit with white, flashy flies.
I used sink tips and full, level sink lines and cast at floating
debris. The 8wt was fine for dolphin up to 15#.

Try using white, pink/white, chart/white clousers in sizes
1 thru 2/0.

You don't need to get to the canyon to catch the critters: Last
year they were as close as 3 miles south of the Vineyard.

If you hook a dolphin on a spinning rod, set the hook, reel
the fish closer to the boat, then put the rod in a rod holder...
the circling/hooked fish will be a curiousity for the other fish
that are bound to be there.... they'll all stick around the boat
as you cast flies and pick 'em off one-by-one.

Oh, and your Tioga reel should do just fine!

Hope this helps.
