Dave,

For the last several years I've been thinking of a Montauk trip in October. I can fish from shore, or in my kayak. I would be using fly, light spin, and plug-casting tackle.

My question is; what is the best approach for a visitor to fish this area (w/o upsetting the locals)? I hear the beach fishing can be great.

Thanks,

Ray

Ray,

My advice about Montauk: GO.

Yes, it's crowded but in mid-October it's on fire. On nice days you can shove your kayak in just anywhere (gotta be careful with the rips). Gin Beach is a good spot for the kayak (caught my first albie on a fly in a kayak off Gin Beach). So is the North Side. You'll have your fill of blues, bass, and albies.

There's great surf fishing right around the Montauk Lighthouse (bucktail city) and you can park in a lot there. If it's blowing out of the NE all the better.

Don't sweat the locals...just use common sense.
