I noticed on Riptide's report of 5/5 that he was fishing in 4 - 12 ft. of water. Would it be necessary to be using an intermediate line to get down to those relatively shallow depts FAST or would a floater with a longer leader / tippet and weighted fly get the job done?

Is there a rule of thumb to know when to change to a faster sinking line? Is it the depth or motion / current you are concerned with?

Just how close to you guys find that you have to make your presentations? Sight casting to a foot, two, or three feet in front of the fish? How far can the fish see and how far out of her way will she travel for lunch? Blind casting is just that, blind so there is no strategy involved, or is there?

Iv'e got some other feeding type questions too. Maybe another thread.

Too elementary? Sorry.

If I'm fishing the deep estruaries I'll bring two fly rods with my, my 9wt with the 350gr depth charge for once the sun gets up, but before I'll fish my 6wt with the only line I'v had for it, a floater with gurglers or bunnies, bunnies are a killer fly. I use them in brown and white, you an twitch them 6" below the surface of slide them along the bottom on a heavy sinking line.

In decent current, If I'm in more then 6ft of water I usually go to my shooting head.

Charlie,

I had a 450gr line on and I used it regardless of the depth. I would let it sink a few seconds in the deeper water and start the retrieve right away in the shallows. I don't think it really made a big difference with this type of fishing. An Int. would have worked well. Letting it sink really didn't do all that much. The fish would come right up for the flies.

I use a Redington NitQ 10wt. I love the rod and it fights the wind great. Damn thing won't load with anything less than a 400 or a 12wt Int. Overkill on the size fish we got yesterday, but just right for throwing the 4/0 herring flies 90' today :brow
