Maybe, maybe not. Go out every night at the beginning of outgoing starting three days before the new moon to a place that has had worms before.

ahhhhh if I only knew where that was.
Jason: If you are thinking of the east end, I would call or go see Ken at Tight Lines in Sag Harbor. I've talked with him in the past about worm hatches in that area.

FMW,
Even though the month and moon say it may be a go. My gut tells me the water is significantly too cool. However, this heat wave the last few days may make it a possibility. In any event, I've found during the New Moon when the waters too cold and worms aren't hatching sometimes grass shrimp and other morsels are pulled out of the Spartina/ Grass and turn on good feedings. Here on the North Shore, I've rarely had them in May and that was when the New Moon came towards months end. June, July and sometimes August are when it happens. Good luck this season
I've never fished a worm hatch . . . and it does seem like its still a bit cool . . . and does seem from reading reports that bass aren't really around in force yet. I think for north shore, June is a more traditional time. I do recall though hearing about worm hatches early on in the year around Sag Harbor.

yeah i will be hitting one of my favorite spots in Sag this weekend. but sounds like the ocean beaches have more fish right now. I know of a few places where they have been catching them.

I've got it down pretty good up here on the North Shore. I'm planing on fishing the wee hours Sun.Am most likely on the water at 3:00 ish. Will let you know if it comes off. If I were a betting man I'd give it a strong 85% chance. June is usually a gaurantee. May could be tricky. July also comes off strong but by then the rats are all over them. Fun on the 6wt. though. Will keep it posted.

There were cinder worms around Monday night (Greenwich area) with fish on them. My friend went out the last two nights and saw many more with working fish. We fished from kayaks which gives you tremendous flexibility on these fish.
tom: I think you somehow really just have to figure out where in your local area there have historically been hatches. I've got to imagine for you that any number of north fork creeks are prime spots. That being said, there are so many sand eels around now in the Gardiners Bay area that I would try to get yourself to a sandy beachfront at around 4:30 am and/or dusk this weekend and you should be golden. That is certainly in my plans . . . if I am not stuck all night in U.S. Open traffic.

I've only fished 2 worm hatches in the Sag area. The first one was right off the highway at Long Beach and I didn't even realize what it was. I fished with about a dozen other guys with fly and spinning tackle. It lasted several evenings. Not a lot of fish were caught, but there were keepers in the mix. The other was at a marina and it was an awesome display. Some fish aggressively breaking the surface and others slowly slurping down the worms as they did their mating dance on the surface of the water. There were so many you could scoop them up in your hand by the dock. That hatch occured on Memorial Day weekend several years ago. Haven't caught a hatch since.

I was hoping in a spot that produces them but the water temps were low, quite low. The July moons will be good.
