I read an article on Big Bluefish returning to the east coast. I have always wanted to make a trip and catch a chopper on the fly. When and where is the best place to go. any guide recommendations? Thanks. -JW

Stayin tune is the key. They have the smaller ones in all over from what Ive read. Their larger kin however, are not in in numbers. Depending on where you plan to fish, North jersey or south, would determine where you should fish. I like south, IBSP is loaded with 4-6lbs in the inlet. Bigger ones are predicted anytime, followin the macherel. Havent heard anything tho.
Last year we caught a load of them on MV last week in May. I wish I had the pics online to show you. Biggest was around 12lbs. It was amazing. Hopefully they will be invading Jersey shores in the next week.
as far as guides, Shore Catch is an awesome outfit.
Talk to people and keep an eye on the water, those yellow-eyed eating machines will be everywhere soon.

The Western End of Long Island Sound and its waters hold some huge bluefish most of the season. The presence of large adult bunker get this fishery up and running. Anywhere from the Throggs Neck Bridge on out to Huntington usually hold fish at one time or another. I'd place my money on Manhasset Bay and Port Washington for the most consistent action. Try R&G Tackle for these waters. I believe they are now running Light Tackle Charters fly fishing included. Further into the season, September- October the Oyster Bay, Cold Spring Harbor, Huntington area is a good bet. September see's me every trip trying for double digit blues on Crease Flies fished on top with either a floater or intermediate. Have had over a dozen from 28-35" 13.5 lbs. Pound for pound beats any Bass same size. If your interested in this area you can also tap Capt. Ken Kuhner at Cold Spring Fly Shop. He's a good guy and runs a tight ship. All the best wherever you take on these magnificent species. (It's good to see them get there due!)

That's funny! I took my dad and brother out striper fishing yesterday and we were catching 5 blues for every striper. Nice big ones - up to 12 pounds. We were complaining about the prevalence of blues keeping the bass off the hooks - and commented that if anyone from a place that didn't have so many blues ever listened to us, they'd think we were nuts.

Seriously, most days from June - November blues are available on the fly in the Raritan Bay area around NJ. Biggest ones are now through June, and again in Oct. and Nov. (with a shot at stripers and albies as well in the fall) But almost always some action to be had - fishing in summer you can fish an 8 weight and catch 10-20 blues in the 2-3 pound class - and they fight great on light tackle! If you're in NJ area, give me a yell, I'll see if I can set you up.
