Fishing in the river remains strong for shad and stripers. for the shad I've
been using a 5 wt rod with a Teeny mini tip, 4 ft of 8lb floro attached to
a very small pink/purple shad dart. Fishing out of an anchored kayak,
you basically cast slightly upstream, give it a little mend to get the dart
down and let the dart slowly swing down below you, at the end of the
swing is when you'll get thumped, in fact letting hang in the current
gets the job done as well. For those without a kayak there is shore
access conducive to fly fishing on the S Hadley side..just north of
the 116 bridge.. park across from St Patricks church and look for the
trail at the north end of the lot... one caveat...if the water is shut off to
the S Hadley side so too is the fishing there for both bass and shad...in which case head south past the 116 bridge go past the athletic fields and
look for the boat launch on the rt...fish below the launch...casting here
is difficult...a good place to master the roll cast if not proficient at it yet.
Stripers are hitting best after dark, no surprise there... we've done our best between 9:30 and midnight for whatever reason. My pescitarian friend
killed another 30 inch bass for the table (I'm still a little sketched out
about eating anything out of that river!) and he said he found more juvy
salmon in the stomach contents. On a different note, I got to demo
a new Albright 9 wt and was very impressed, had no problem throwing
90ft of intermediate, an awesome rod for $350 . Basically with all the
new high performance, mid priced rods ( the TFO Lefty Kreh series is another
one I was impressed by) there no reason to buy an expensive rod
unless you can cast beyond 90 ft or perhaps status symbols are your thing.
I still love my Loomis but for the price the Albright is a cant miss.
Look forward to my annual bluefish fest off Cotuit, things should get jiggy
down there next week...if you want to introduce a friend to bluefish on the
fly thats the spot. Working with a friend a hookless popper on a spinning
rod will bring them right into the beach were a popper or gurgler on fly
rod will get a violent reaction.

Coffee Chris

Some bigger stripers have moved into the Holyoke/Chicopee/Agawam area along with the schoolies. 40" plus. Check the Striper forum out on www.newenglandshad.com (http://www.newenglandshad.com) for more info.

There's also a spot or two to fish on the west side of the river below the Ddam although one has to climb the wall to access it. I've been fly fishing at the small discharge and catching shad and a few small stripers. The locations and directions to these spots are available on the shad website mentioned.

Can you let me know more about the bluefish fest off Cotuit?
