Long-time stream flyfisher here got the saltwater bite. I want to do some fishing for stripers, blues or anthing else that is out there right now but I don't know where to fish. Any suggestions for a saltwater newbie that wants to fish from the surf? I live in north NJ and was planning to go to Raritan Bay this week. I've read some good reports about the bay.
If I go there what part should I fish? Do I actually fish in the Bay or the inlet?

Thanks!
Dave

Sandy Hook offers easy access and the fish are there. There are spots all over the bay, but you have to wind around the back roads to get to them. Its best to go with someone who knows it the first time. If you still want to go to the bay, follow the signs for the Manhattan Ferries. I don't know how far North you are, but check out Coastal Flyrodders. A lot of guys fish the bay and can help you.

My uncle fishes the bayshore around Port Monmoth frequently. I mostly fish from boat, so I'm not that expert on shore points, but he does real well with stripers and blues. Stripers mostly a night bite now. I believe you need to fish the tides along the bayshore - 2 hours before and after high tide. Good wading. There are a LOT of blues in the bay right now.

Thanks for the info guys. I just have to get out there and do some exploring. Can't wait until I hook into a blue or a striper.
