Will be spending the long weekend on Shelter Island and I'm hoping for a little intel. Any suggestions for early morning trips in the Shelter Island/Gardiners/Plum area? Thanks, Ron
I can't tell you exactly where to go, but if you concentrate around any creek and outflow, especially on outgoing tide, I'm sure you will do great. There are plenty of bass around there now.
When you go back and look at some "earlier" writing on saltwater fly fishing, i.e., Lou Tabory's Saltwater Fly Fishing, springtime fishing around Shelter Island is spoken of with reverence and gets way more ink than the Montauk Fall Run.

FMW-
Is Tabory's book, "Stripers On The Fly" or "Inshore Fly Fishing"?
I think they are both by Tabory but Inshore Fly Fishing came first and was the first fly fishing book I ever bought. I think for a while this was the main "treatise" on northeast fly fishing . . . though now I guess it has some more up to date competitors like the books by Ed Mitchell and the like. Theres alot of references in Inshore Fly Fishing to fly fishing the creeks of Shelter Island for weakies.

Thanks Guys. I plan on picking up one of those books. I fished the Ruins on Saturday morning. Lot's of Terns over the bar there with small blues underneath. The wind was blasting us so we went down the East side of Gardiners to Cartwright Island looking for some Bass on the flats, nothing doing. Went back to Hay beach on Shelter Island and found more small blues. Got out again on Sunday evening and found, you guessed it, small blues (Hay beach again). Next visit I plan on trying over near the Mashomak Preserve and South Ferry area.
Boy, through the whole season that bar at the end of Bostwick Point always has some blues on it . . . the go-to spot when you're entertaining company and absolutely need to find a fish.

Try the creeks on the west side of the island if the water doesnt get to warm.
