without giving any "spots" away, can anyone put me into some decent places to wade? i am in the city, i have fished the north shore a bit, done ok, fished the hudson (sketchy wading!), fished a little on the south shore. i have some good places out east but they are FAR. i have a car, i know where i'm going. it's just hard to tell private places from public access on maps. any help would be appreciated. thanks.
I haven't waded from shore much from areas you can drive to (I go to flats in my boat, anchor and then wade).
However, Island Beach State Park may be a shorter drive for you than the East End of Long Island and there are spots you can wade from shore. I only did it once a few years back - I scared a bass or two - and I have no idea what months of spring it would be good for, but its another car accessible spot.
If you do this, you will have to pay to get onto IBSP but from what I remember its not that expensive.

Raritan Bayshore and Sandy Hook State Park are both good possibilities, and only an hour from Manhattan. Raritan Bayshore offers great striper fishing in spring and fall (mostly over by now), blues/fluke all summer. Good wading on shallow flats.

Jones Inlet (West end of Jones Beach)
R. Moses- the back side. Park in the western most lot and walk in on the 4WD road. It's a zoo on weekends- way too many 4WD vehicles!!
Sunken Meadow SP on the N. side.
Breezy Point- Gateway sticker needed to get in plus very small parking lot.
If you go into any of the state parks after dark you need the permit. No longer available-last day was the end of April. Why? I have no idea! Sometimes they don't check.
And yes, Sandy Hook. Gateway permit needed for night time- $50! I don't go all that often as it's a 150 mile RT from Flushing with bad traffic coming home.
There are probably other spots but people don't talk.
If you get the idea that access is limited for the wading flyrodder you are right.
I moved into the city last summer and get the fishing jones quite a bit. I lived in CT to I know spots in Stratford, Milford, Fairfield, Westport, Stamford & Darien. I am interested in exploring LI as well. I've been out to Montauk a few times but agree that it is quite a hike. Doing the reverse commute keeps me out in Greenwich, but I would be interested in trying some new spots if you ever wanted a wing-man.
