Started the day checking the flats outside of Cotuit and Poppy for blues. After verifying they were active in several areas, I headed over to Succonessett Shoal. Set up on one of the outer rips and worked the first set of waves with an orange ranger. While the first fish in the area was a bluefish, most of the action was stripers in the 28-29" range. I would located them with the orange ranger and then try getting a fly into the area. Unfortunately the ribbon squid fly I was trying out was difficult for me to get and distance.

The afternoon was spent taking students from my school out to the flats for those bluefish I came across earlier. Since they had a tendency to reel the wire leader into the guides and then try to cast, the easiest method was trolling orange or white/red rangers. In the time I had, I managed to get eight students out, with all groups managing a few fish.

After a nice cook out with the kids, I went back outside and drifted off oregon beach. The rangers had fish all over them almost every cast. Did manage a hit on the ribbon squid. Headed back in at sunset, As I traveled towards the narrows, I notice a few surface swirls and in the narrows there were boils and spashes all over the place, water temp 68... worm hatch!!!!. Of course I did not have any worm flies. Checked through what I had, found an small bunny fly that was almost red from rust. Worked fine, caught a number of fish up to 20". Action did not last long but was a great finish to the day.
Warm week coming up be on the look out for more hatches.
