Recently I was fishing out in the San Juan Islands and after casting all day and catching most of the day my elbow was sore. I didn't give it much thought and wenrt out the following week and had a couple of hits on the rod and the pain in my elbow made me stop fishing. So I got to run the boat. I went to the doctor on Monday and he said I have fly fisherman's elbow (tennis elbow for those athletically inclined). So next time you're out there beware!! I hope to be flinging flies again in about 10 days --127-3-

That's one reason I carry a spinning rod. Flycast left handed, spin cast right handed....Go all day, everyday without elbow problems.
I recently finish PT for tennis elbow (induced by too much golf, so why don't they call it golf albow??). The therapist recommended moist heat 2 times per day for 30 minutes. It's helps a lot.
Take a damp washcloth, place it in a OPEN ziplock bag, microwave for 2 minutes or until very warm to hot, close bag, place second washcloth or towel over soar area, place bag/hot towel over dry towel (prevent burning) leave for 30 minutes, reheat as needed.

OUCH! Have you tried a two handed rod yet? I have been spey casting for a while now and have no problems with joint pain, unlike my single hand rod days. Just a thought.

I carry one of those tenis elbo braces when I am casting heavy flys on big rods. They cost about $5 and work great. Learning to fish with the other hand also helps.
