Was at a wedding in San Diego this past weekend. Spent some time on the beaches of La Jolla shores. Went something like this...

I take note of all the bait fish. Girlfriend takes note of warm water.
I see shaddows. Girlfriend sees nude sunbather.
I spot small schools of croaker, about 2-4lbs in anywhere from 6" to 3 or 4 fet of water in the surf. Girlfriend watches a surfer.

"What are you looking at?
"Fish"
"Where?"
"Right near that shark (finger pointed to her left)"

She is indian..so it's that much harder for her to turn her face white. She did. When I stopped laughing I pointed out the 2' shark. She was briefly amused.

Bottom line, if you are there bring a rod. There were tons of 2-4lb croaker in the surf line. Every 3 or 4 seconds you would see 2 or 3 together. Did see some larger faster fish cruising in the waves (within fly rod distance) but couldn't identify. My West coast ID skills are weak and I wasn't using Polarized glasses. They were about 2 to 3 feet long, wide profile, all aqua/light blue in color except for some black and white specks near the pectoral fins and tails. Did see several small sharks in the surf up to about 6" of water. Largest was about 3 ft. TONS of bait in the wash. One sort of looked like an Angel shark (I don;t even know if they have them there). Wide head, about 2ft long, and that leopardy coloration. More of a sand color though, like a blonde striper, not dark brown.

Since I was only in town for a wedding and didn't have much time, I left my fly rod in Bean town thinking if I brought it and even tried to sneak away it would be a long quiet flight home.
Quote of the day: "Wow, there are a lot of fish around, you should have brought your fly rod..."

Secret to every relationship....Comunication.

Murphy’s law says the only reason you found yourself on a beach with free time, an agreeable girlfriend and a lot of fish around is BECAUSE you didn’t have your fly rod.

For me bringing a rod on a trip like that is like an insurance policy against any of those things happening.
