Hooked up with a buddy of mine to do some surf kayaking at the mouth of the Narrow River in RI yesterday. We put in at the bridge outside narragansett, I was paddling a 8ft whitewater boat and just managed to fit a 2-piece spin rod and a box of rubber baits under the skirt. On the paddle to the mouth there was some sporadic tern action, I took a few casts but there were lots of weeds in the water preventing a good retrieve. Also a few boats around trolling and drifting chunks, but not doing anything.

We got the the mouth, by the private club and were looking at head high sets breaking from the beach almost to the outside rocks. We were psyched and spent a couple of hours catching some choice waves, and we had the place all to ourselves.

The whole time there were birds working sandeels, everytime a big set would come through there were bass swirling in the foam picking off stunned sand eels. I couldn't resist and as my boat is not set-up for fishing I would wait for a lull, paddle towards shore with my rod tucked into my PFD and make a few casts before dodging the larger sets. However, the weeds defeated me.

Paddled to the outer rocks just outside the surf line, and BINGO. First cast brought a 8lb blue, couple of casts later a 20" schoolie, after that a 24" schoolie. All on a 6" fin-S. Finally, I hooked into a larger fish, that proceeded to tow me into the rocks. I had to have my partner give me his bow in order to pull me off the rock, since w/o a rodholder I couldn't paddle and fight the fish at the same time. Finally I landed a FAT 28lb 40" cow. Which I decided to keep, and had to dispatch with a blade between the eyes and then slip under the skirt and between my legs. Made for a slow bow heavy paddle back.

Good job man!
That sounds like some high adventure.

I did not fish last weekend, so it's cool to read the stories.
