I was anchored up around DI on sunday am and a boat was trolling upcurrent and turned around me. I saw one of the lines hit my stern, then the eel rig went bouncing over the stern and my paddle. Moments later I heard the loud bang of heavy line snapping. I then realized that they had stuck the other line on my anchor rope. Fortunately the anchor held its ground!

Why would someone fish for kayaks like that? All the fight would have been at the boat, I don't think that I could paddle against the 50 lb test they were using. Kayaks can't be good to eat.

Eels don't seem like a very effective bait for kayaks, if it was a $50 or $100 going by, I might have been tempted to grab it and they could have had an easy hookup.

Personally,

I find trolling with an inflatable jessica simpson doll during daylight hours is very effective. While a Halle Berry outfishes Jessica 2:1 at night.

last season there were postings for effective baits. one that got my interest was casting/ livelining kitttens for trophy bass; i suspect it may get a few whacks from yaks as well. my 2c

One of the funniest things I ever saw in print was in National Lampoon in 1982 when they had a pictorial of a new sport- Dog Fishing in Manahttan. There was a pick-up outfitted with a fighting chair in the backs and they were trolling cats up and down the street. One picture shows the scene at the chair and the at the hook end as a large doberman takes the bait and the fight was on! --126-3-

i've found that an 8' kayak can be tasty eating. anything larger than that and they get kind of rubbery and tasteless. for canoes, i stick with 15' or less. again, the larger ones just lack that special flavor!

I've used this lure when tryin to catch a black lab it also works well for Fords abd Chevy's but they tend to just run over it.

Down here we are using Charlese Theron for bait. And I think the problem your having with any yaks over 8' is over cooking. Much like squid, you cook it either very short, or very long. Try that with a little lexan and you will be full for a while.

Is there a rule of thumb on yak fishing with a fly rod? When do you go from an 8wt to a 10 wt? I asume you use floating lines ans surface flies. Probably a wire trace like used for bluefish would be helpful also. Being new to yak fishing from a yak it's all new to me !!!!!

I have caught many center consoles, but never a yak on light tackle. Well I must confess, I never did land the center consoles, just had them on for a brief moment. Gets expensive loosing Atom poppers on big boats.

never occured to me before but suspect yak as a predator and game fish would be exciting. i suspect you have a better chance of actually landing one compared to center console. but just think of the fight you can expect boatside once you get em close, i bet the battle keeps getting better and better!
