Hi. I have the M1, M3, M4, M7 and LOHR Bauers and find them to be great for both freshwater and saltwater. Same as any reel though, just give them a rinse after a session. Totally uncomplicated, bombproof reels, in my opinion. Do find that the anodising doesn't take too much punishment around the edge of the cage though. Probably no worse than any other reel in this respect, I guess.

I have an M4 and know several others that use Bauers in saltwater. I am positive that you will be very happy with your reel.
If you are religious about sliding the neoprene cover, which was designed to fit on the reel when it is on a rod in transit, you do alot to protect the finish. The dings that I have got in the past were from bouncing around in boats. My three year old M4 looks brand new.
I have a six year old M-4, and aside from a couple of tiny dings and nicks, the reel is still a beauty. :brow I'm hell on equipment, and I never wash it off like I should, or use the neoprene cover and it still looks and works fine.
Enjoy the reel.

Awesome information, thanks alot. I am amazed at how light this reel is in comparison to its size, not to mention is looks oh so sweet on the spey rod. I am not known to be religious with my gear, i do wash them off after every saltwater venture, however, I hardly ever clean the line
