Nice blues tonight in the cove between highlands and the five sisters. I knew it was only a matter of time with the east wind sending warmer water around here. the Teton drag was screaming. Blues tonight were various sizes. Mostly 5-7 pounders on the fly. Trolling the tube I found bigger.

Had fun with blues out of a yak earlier this season. Didn't have a Boga so it got kind of interesting trying to land one of these guys. Nice fish.

I went to the inside since the tide was up and flat calm water...nothing again. Should have stayed in front (nice fish!), its outfished the back 5 to 1 for me this year, you would think I would learn my lesson by now. All I get to bite are no-see-ums. I think this has been the worst year yetr for them with the lack of wind...I will be there (Seal Cove) tonight if you are out...I'll bring that line.

So are you adicted to the fly yet?

I won't be able to get out tonight till around 10pm. I didn't know that was the name of the cove. Go get em!

I am just starting to see the flies potential. I think a heavy sinking line is in order. I love it when you get a nice run. I just got the scotty rod holder put on up front and look forward to trolling a fly.

Just a thought on trolling flies - it can make your life a missery if the flies are not tied propperly, the flyline will wind up if the fly does not track very straight. This will then cause problems when you start casting after that, in your Kayak with your rodholders and fishfinders and all you will have more tangles than you need.
Now I am not critisizing or saying thats what will happen but I've seen it happen and if you store the line on the reel like that you can ruin it very quicly.
Trolling flies has never been a good idea to me although it works well at times.
Maybe when you get into it take the time and just sit and cast and work an area at different depths and retrieve speeds.
Try poppers for Blues as well and Striper on a fly thats the most exciting.
I have not caught all that many Stripers to be an authority on it but I've caught more on poppers than clousers.
Hopefully I can get out there this week as well, we met there once but I would like to have the oppertunity to fish with you guys.
Nothing beats local knowledge and time spent on the water.
Cheers Leon
PS. Nice fish

Twisting problems.....try a loop knot versus a clinch. I get less twisting that way.

Thanks for the tip on line twist. I have dealt with it on spinning and conventional tackle. I add ball bearing swivels and rudders. Maybe making up a long leader with bb swivel or rudder would solve it. I guess I will find out when I get more into trolling with the fly.

This time of the year the cove comes alive. The last few years has been very productive there. Lots of structure there. Its a great area to launch for me with the cart out of my backyard. Its the area to troll eels at night for me. Yesterday IMO the water was too choppy to make a popper effective. Today should be a bit calmer. Most of the bigger fish were down at the bottom. When caught the blues would upchuck halfs of small herring.

Are you guys going to go out tonight?
Hopefully I can get a quiet night from work and standby and get out there before 8pm.

Maybe I'll get out there too if you guys want some company from a rookie. Quick question, is seal cove the space to the right of the 5 sisters before Yirrel beach? Do you guys launch from DI?

Just came in from a two hour put. Still loaded with blues and some big deep on the finder or could be big bass. The mung is more tonight but may improve with high tide. You can launch right off of Shore drive. The cove is between the five sisters and the highlands condos. Look for the restaurant, park and launch. Good Luck. I may be out there tonight trolling eels.

I never got out. Got home late just before dark and the cold wind convinced me to stay in. Maybe tonight.

And I thought neither sleet nor snow nor big waves or windy conditions could stop you and your SinK --127-3- :D

He's getting old Joe :D Shaun has been surprising me lately.
"That's pretty far out isn't it?"
"We're not really set up for Mako"
"Are we there yet?"

I am training for Huricane season right around the corner...the winds are warm then so I have been conditioning for that....runners train at high altitudes, same theory applies.. Winds were cold but the water was too flat for my taste:brow

Gettin' deep. ;)

Shaun/Sam-
Your last 2lb Charters report is killing me. I keep looking at that pic out through the Mnemsha jetties and it keeps reminding me of the the time I laid a 3 oz bank sinker and a whole squid on the roof of a boat in that front slip. Woke up the Captain and crew, of course, who were most pleased and promptly returned my gear after unwinding it from their radar.

Wes,

Isn't it amazing how much noise tackle makes when it slams into a boat. I also like that helpless feeling I get just after realizing I over-estimated my casting distance!!!!

Kind of like chipping it on to the roof of the clubhouse on the 18th. ;)

I may be heading there Saturday morning. How is the parking near the five sisters? Are they ticketing us out of towners?

ruge13

Only between 1am and 5am. But since its a public beach its not legal to launch there anyway. Lifeguards might get in a tiff if you try..

I'll be there well before the lifeguards show up, but I guess they may be there when I want to leave. I thought there was some type of boat ramp at the five sisters, or at least it looked like a boat ramp. Any problems with using that?

ruge13
07-29-2004, 04:39 PM
Nah, that ramp is an old one, towards the South end of shore drive. Its blocked by wood between the cement wall. You can still park in front of it. Or anywhere down there, thats off the public beach on the cobble beach. No issues with lifeguards there. The ramp only goes to the water at high tide, otherwise its washed out and you have to climb down.

Kayakninja,

Nice blues man! Although I am not a big fan of blues I will take 1 anyday over a skunk!!!!!!! U Betcha!

The Grudge,

U like Les Pauls? I used to have a Custom...... Maxed out with EMG's and a built in preamp.... I have since gone to Paul Reed Smith (Rick Derringer signed of mine the other night). I do miss my old Les tho (1972)! It was a sweet axe! :) Last time I saw it was in New London..... Some dirt bag was spilling beer all over it while he played some silly death metal crap.......... :(

The sticker or resident is not in effect on Shore Drive in Winthrop. Park anytime you want. I live on Cutler and it only affects side streets. Plenty of great launching on shore drive and parking is usually there. This is not a beach visited by lots of people. The beach is not the best . Look for a ramp by the italian restaurant and park where you can. Have a blast. I usually launch out of my backyard and cart over my yak. Fishing in this cove is good an hour before and 3 after. Weird hours but take it from me I put my time in here. If perhaps it is dead there is always by the five sisters breakwater, the water tower, the highlands, the Revere Beach breakers or go over to deer island. If anyone has any questions on this location send me a message. If you see me in my yellow bannana say hello.

Love the les pauls. Unfortunately, mine has come to a grusome end. I tripped over the patch cord and yanked it off the stand. It snapped the headstock clear from the neck. Had it glued and it snapped again. Oh well. It was a les paul studio, but played great. This summer I had to decide between a new yak or a new guitar....oh the tough choices. PRS makes unbelievable guitars.....I think this winter when the fish go bye-bye I'm going to buy an Strat American delux and start playing again.

Fished the winthrop area from 7:00-10:00 on Saturday. I was hoping to be on the water by 5:30-6:00 but went the wrong way. I've been fishing RI the last several trips and instinctively headed south yesterday morning, not east toward Boston. It took me about 20 minutes before I realized my mistake. --124-3 If I wasn't meeting someone at Winthrop I probably would have just kept going.

Plan was to meet with another kayaker at the five sisters and scout the area and then head over to faun. I got two keeper sized bass on storms trolling the area from five sisters to Highland and decided to skip the trip to faun. Wind had picked up and while it wasn't choppy, the paddling was slow, my heart wasn't in it, and time was against me as I had to be back. The other kayaker I was with got a big bird nest in his rod after about 2 hours and was done for the day. It was his first time on the saltwater so he decided to make the paddle over to fauns to get a feel for the place and because it was a nice day.

Good report No Time. I was out there Friday night and more fish were right in line with the sisters and the highlands or condos. I had to get eels down to 20 feet to present with nothing more then a half an eel coming back  . The sisters breakwater had fish up too 36". I will hopefully be out there tonight with eels again. I am glad to see the water back down to low to mid sixties.

I was marking nothing near the top or midwater. However, I was marking a lot near the bottom as well. However, with my electronics it is tough to tell between weeds and bottom hugging fish. I didn't cover a lot of water and had several bumps plus the two fish so the place seems to have a lot of fish. I paddled over to the highlands area for the first time and could see bottom. Looks like it would be a great place after dark.

I have been dying to try the area from my Kayak and would love the company since :

a. It is more fun to fish with another,
b. I need an excuse not to return my RayMarine handhelf vhf,
c. I have no idea where any of the spots are that have been mentioned,
d. The probablilty I will actully go, rises from 50% to 100% if I say I will meet someone there.

Do I hear any takers for a mini-yak conclave on Tuesday 8/3?
