I used to get all my stuff at Midland Tackle until they closed.

I have three Lamiglas Graphite surf blanks I want to make into rods, got the guide spacing numbers from Ron Arra, just have to order parts.

First, as long as I'm going to take the time to do this I want to use good guides. I have a buch of the older Fuji spinning guides, the ones with the lime green inserts around the ceramic ring. Are these outdated or still worth taking the time to put on the rod? What's currently the favored ring for a northeast surf spinning and conventional rod?

What's a good rod winder for a casual user, are there any plans availableto make my own that are big enough ofr a surf rod?

Finally, which online dealer has the best price/service quotient?

Thanks, Rob

I was planning on making a 10' conventional from a GSB 120IM. I have an 11ft blank but it's a XRA 132-1, to light a rod for a conventional, don't you think?

I also have an older, yellow, Lamiglas I cut back to a 12 tip (rod's 10'6") that I'll make into conventional eventually.

And besides I have two old Fenwick conventional surf rods that I use for bait fishing. Love 'em.

Hey Marky, do you underwrap your guides on surf rods?

Rob

I second the Mudhole suggestion I have ordered from them many times always a good experience. I actually like those old Fuji guides with the green cushion ring But he new guides are Lighter.

I just built a surf rod out of the 120 1M, not a conventional though and I used the Fuji alconite BMNAT. They are a nice light guide. A couple of years ago I built a 1321 L using Fuji Hardaloy BSVLG.
Not sure if I confused matters, but I hope this helps.

Tony, was this 1321 L a spinning or conventional? Mind sharing your guide spacing?

Rob, the 1321L is a spinning rod. The spacings are:

Guide size: 16 20 30 40 50

Spacing 10 21 1/4 35 1/8 51 3/8 71

The guides are Fuji BSVLG, although I am thinking or replacing the guides with BMNAG, not too sure yet.

Hope this helps

Thanks Tony. What is the advantage of the BNMAG rings? What will you use for the 50 ring since the BMNAG's only go up to 40?

Just for your info, I have a sheet from Ron Ara that gives the Lamiglas factory spacings as well as his own personal rod's spacing on the same blank. He only uses 4 guides.

Do you wrap by hand or have a machine?

Thanks, Rob

Rob, I wrap by machine, just got it this winter and still working the bugs out of it. I like the look of the BMNAG guides and they are a lot lighter. I just built a GSB 120 1M with them and the 40 worked good as a butt guide. I think that I would probably go 40 30 25 20 16, or 40 30 20 16 12, not sure. I want to lay it out and test cast it. I ended up using 6 guides on the 120 (40 30 20 16 12 10) so I might see how that works. Regardless of what I choose it won't happen until winter.
