Trying to buy a Fly Rod

Hi;
I could use some help.....
My wife says I need a lot of help ( 36 years, Maybe she's right....Nah..)

First of all........
I've been fishing for Stripers for 25+ years around Cape Cod.
Most of my rods are conventional setups.
I have Loomis, ST Croix, Lamiglas, Zziplex, Breakaway
( production and custom Built)
in 9' to 12'. I appreciate the highend rods and
also have some low end rods (Tica, Tsunami).
They all have their place at certain times.
As we know....You can never have enough Rods.

Over the winter I got in to Fly Tying.
I have been building Wood plugs for a good many years.
I found that the flies will out-fish plugs on certain days
and they are a lot easier to build and fun too.
I have been using them as Droppers in front of Swimmers
and Pencil Poppers with great success.

OK...Here is my problem....

I wanted to buy a fly rod.
I have a reel that will "get me by" to start.
I have been researching an entry level rod to try.
The type of fishing I will be doing is as follows.....
Calm days, 18-24" schoolies, 2-4" flies, mostly back bays.
The fish are generally in close ( 20-30 feet) at the 2 spots I found.

Here's what I have found......
1) Don't buy an Albright, Redington, or any other rod under $100.
They will break....
You will be unhappy with them.....
The warranty stinks...
2) You should buy $50 Fly Line..
You'll be unhappy with lesser line.
You can't cast as far with cheap line ($35)
3) You need a reel that costs over $100.
I know drag quality improves with price.
I really don't understand this one. ( remember, small fish)
( I've fished for schoolies with a zebco push button and 6lb test, I'm nuts)
4) You really have to test cast the rod you intend to buy.
This I appreciate, I'd like to feel any rod I buy.
Where is the inventory ?
I've been to quite a few shops and have not found a lot of rods.
This makes it hard to test them.

Conclusion........

For as little as $150-$200 I can get an entry level rod that
I will be unhappy with and it will break plus the warranty stinks.

Cost is not the problem, I just don't want to spend $200 to find out
I don't like a fly rod.
I don't mind buying a $75 rod and selling it for $25 if I find I like Fly Rodding
and I wish to buy a nice rod.

Questions.....

1) Is there actually a low priced rod that I could buy to get me started ?
2) Bass Pro shops has a 9' 8wt with line and reel for $49.
If I'm going to be so miserable with an inexpensive rod, why not this one.
3) I found a Temple Fork Lefty Signature 9' 8wt for $99.
Seems like a nice rod and it felt good, your opinion would be appreciated.
4) For the type of fishing described above, do I nee an 8wt or will a 6/7 do ?

If I sound frustrated, I am, Sorry....

Again, I'm not expecting a low end rod to provide me with top quality
performance. I know I can't hit the center of the Canal with a 10' tica
with 30lb mono, that's why I have an 11'9" Breakaway with a Mag Elite on it.

Any suggestions will be appreciated to help me with a decision.

Even if I don't buy a rod, I'll keep building Flies.
I am amazed at how 20lb fish will devour a 2" epoxy sand eel
and leave a 6" pencil alone.
I have been using droppers for a long time (Red Gills mostly) and
I find that the fly brings a harder and more decisive hit from fish.
My best on a fly has been a 27 lb that took Chartruse/Olive Deceiver
that was in front of a 6" Herring color Swimmer I built.

I have read of problems with Albright rods breaking. I have read of problems with Orvis T3 rods breaking. Any rod can break. I don't care whether it cost $50 or $750. And you can get inexpensive rods with decent warranties.

Similar argument. You need a good line that will meet your needs. Maybe its a floater; maybe its an intermediate line. Truth is, most fly lines are in a comparable price range. Newer lines (a bit more expensive) tend to have more advanced coatings and therefore are slicker and cast farther. Also there are now lines designed specifically for cold saltwater fishing like we have in the NE.

You need a reel that anodized for saltwater use. Otherwise you need to be very. very careful or, in short order, you will have a rusted mess. You also want a reel with a smooth drag. You don't need to be able to stop a tug boat but you do want to be able to prevent overruns, etc.

Then you haven't found the right shops yet. No shop is going to carry every rod on the market but there are many shops that will have several covering different price ranges that you can try. Make sure you are visiting fly shops and not general B&Ts. The fly shops will generally ahve more of a selection. You may have to visit more than one to have the opportunity to cast several rods in the same range.

Yes. You mentioned one. I would seriously consider the Temple Fork Rods (TFO) - great rods for the money.

Don't know the BPS rod. I could recommend the Temple Forks. I have three (two trout rods and a 9' 9wt for the surf) along with several other "higher-priced rods."

You could probably get away with a 7wt most of the time but I would go with the 8-wt which will get you through probably 98% of the times. You never know when you'll need just a bit more oomph!

Finally, if you haven't decided on a reel, take a look at the Teton Tiogas. I read and heard a lot of good stuff about these reels. Yes they are a bit over $100 but worth it from what I have heard.

FWIW, I've been fly fishing since I was 9 and I think that TFO rod is a very nice casting rod. It is head and shoulders above any other inexpensive rod you've mentioned. Also, it favors a new caster by its progressive taper.

I'd also stay with the 8 wt, and since you are casting so close [30 ft], use a 9 or 10 wt line. That rod will easly hold 45 ' of 8/9 wt line in the air, so you'll need the extra weight to load the rod. The benefit of uplining is that you will be able to learn easier now, and after you become addicted, you'll already have a 10 wt line for your future 10 wt rod.

Its a matter of small degree for experienced casters. BTW, fly shops do not normally put expensive lines on their test rods, nor do most rod reps at tackle shows.
Since you are new, start with less expensive line and practice a lot with it. As your needs are defined, fell free to buy what you need.

A simple pawl drag is all you need for what you want. Like the zebco you used, reels like a medalist would need to be rinsed well and avoid dunking in the salt. Of course, you don't lose any points for having a better reel. It's up to you.

For a newcomer, that's ridiculous advice. Don't take this as an insult, but since you're new, you won't know what you're looking for. It's like kicking the tires of a car for you, you're doing something, but it tells you nothing. Until you learn to cast, you have to buy the rod on faith.

Bottom line is that to do what you want to do, you can't really go wrong. Have fun.

Some thoughts: 1st, good advise Pa guy. My thoughts are find a shop and take a casting lesson with a few rods.....Tiger Woods has a coach...All pro
tennis players have coaches....I once shot a lot of skeet and took a few lessons from the top shooters in the game...yep...learn or at least have pro help when "trying out" you new rod.....This is where fly shops do their best work.....Lefty series is fantastic I have cast each and every one of them..siganature series, TiCR's...alll wt's ....big bang for the buck and they stand behind the rod....to include trunk lids and car door breaks....

You can't go wrong w/the silver label orvis rods. An 8wt. tip flex would be my first choice. I've landed stripers over 25lb on an 8wt. no problem at all. If you want to save $$$ check ebay. Most rods new and never fished with warranty intact will sell for around 60-70% of retail.

As a dealer we get this question a lot. You obviously love to fish, invest considerable time/money in it and are probably in it for the long run. The TFO pro series 9' 8wt is a great rod. We sell more of these to first time saltwater fly rodders than any other rod, and have had one back, out of nearly a hundred rods sold, for breakage. In addition even experienced casters when test casting rods at the shop from four different manufacturers will often choose this model over much more expensive equiptment, purely on performance. The tioga # 8 is much the same way. Relatively inexpensive but built well enough to withstand rigorus use with little maintenence. the salt will eat lesser gear even if properly maintauned. Total cost for the outfit is $289 + tax as we throw in a free fly line and backing, or a half hour casting lesson with combo purchase. additional hours of instruction are $30, which we usually split into two half hour sessions, go home practice come back. I don't know where you are posting from, but would be happy to dicuss these options and many more at length. Also.... never forget the 'house rod' or 'emergency back up rod'
policy.... even if you initially invest in a less expensive rod to 'get
into' the sport... chances are you'll either buy, or win, or otherwise
walk into another rod you will (probably) like better than your first.

Think of your first rod purchase as an experiment, or entre, into
the sport.

I've collected nearly two dozen fly rods (of which I purchased
about 6)... and to tell you the truth, a rod I go back to all the
time was my first one (a slow, lanky, silky-smooth Scott).

Even if the first rod you get isn't the ideal rod, you'll get use/
value out of it as a back-up/loaner/kick-around/etc rod...

all of the advice is pretty solid in my opinion.i also have heard great things about "Temple Fork" rods.to prevent you from wasting money can i PLEASE suggest you spend the extra 30 or 40 bucks for a Ross Cimmaron(or any Ross model.#4,would probably be best for a 9'9" rod) instead of the Teton.my first reel was a tioga and i put it in an early grave.not impressed!i now own 5 ross reels and am constantly amazed by their durability and drag system(not to mention their service and warranty)i fish alot.not stripers, but salmon and steelhead pull pretty hard!!i've never been let down...in addition, i fish them in the salt and just give them a quick rinse when i'm done.again...great reels!as far as the line,i hate spending alot of money on them but what i hate even more is when they fall apart,cracking and peeling.(maybe i fish too much!)a huge criteria for me is the warranty.(yes,lines have warranties too!)Scientific Angler has weight forward(7-10wt.)lines for about $45 bucks(i like the GPX or old ultra series)but like i said,when its toast...they are awesome at replacing it for a brand new one in days.good luck.

I'd highly recommend TFO as well. They are one of the truly extraordinary buys in flyfishing out there. For the money they are fantastic, and sometimes even cost not a factor they can outperform rods costing much more money. A TiCr 12 wt replaced my T&T 12 wt tarpon rod (a great rod IMO) because it simply performed better.

you mentioned that you shouldn't buy an albright rod for less than $100, but i don't know of any that cost that price! they offer one that sells for $125. i have the EXS series rod that retails for about $300 and it's an amazing rod. i think it's as good as rods that cost a couple of hundred dollars more!

I think an okuma integrity reel and a TFO rod would be an excellent choice not only as an entry level rod but as a backup when you decide to purchase that Sage/Tibor set up. Don't listen to all that crap about having to spend 100's of dollars on a set up or else you will be unhappy. Sure there is a bunch of inexpensive junk out there but you can find a good combo at a resonable price. I recently came back from a trip to mexico and heard from a number of guides and fly shop owners that need to cork drag reels or you can expect that ross cimmeron break apart. There was a guy out on a panga catching Dorado on a Pfluger ( 40$ reel). I went with a bunch of high end gear but I had fun catching fish on my brother less expensive set up. The TFO have great customer service and a life time warranty. You probably won't find a better deal on ebay for 100$. I have read that okuma reels corrode easier then higher end reels but they work fine and you should be able to get a few years out of it. Tiogo/Teton also make a great product for 150$. I would recommend a quality line becasue it makes a big difference in casting distence + the cheap ones coil up easily. You probably will need a fast sinking or a clear intermediate line. I reccomend the winston Ibis. Although its over $300 its an outstanding rod. Its strong and it casts a mile( i find my dad in my yard casting my rod for prctice instead of his). Any way good luck on finding a rod!
