after shopping for way too much fly tackle, i've turned my attention to filling out my spin fishing collection! --127-3-
i just picked up a st croix tidemaster (my 2nd st croix spinning rod --126-3- ) 8-17 lb 1/4-3/4 oz rod, and i need to find a reel to match. i don't want to spend more than $100 on it. i'm looking for a reel that can handle the lower end of the rod's line weight, so something that's meant for 8-12 lb test. any recommendations would be appreciated!
I put a Penn Slammer 460 a 7' tidemaster (10- 20#) and love it.
Take a look at the 260 or 360, both around $110

I'll second the Spheros as the best thing going under $100.

FWIW ... I matched the Teramar rod with a Spheros reel. That set-up was intended to be the very good quality el-cheapo rig. Its worked very nice for Bass & blues. The intent was to have a nice package that my Kids (or friends) could use ... I have an expectation that this rig will be beat on and abused. The other light beat-on rig is a St. Croix Tidemaster matched to a finor megalite..again its not a bad "beat-on" rig. The Spheros is OK...I did notice though that MVP (in Burlington) had a summer clearance sale sign...maybe the fishing stuff is going cheap. I think they carry Penn's & Baitrunners. with a sale I'm sure you could get something under a $100 bucks.
I looked around for a while and came up with the penn 360 slammer
with 20lb stren magnathin on a stcroix 8'6" casts everything from tin
to hi/lows with clams and a 3oz pyramid

thanks for the advice everyone! i just placed an order for a spheros 4000. it cost me $65 plus $5 shipping/handling. river marine supply in florida is the cheapest place i found to get them. even on ebay they go for $60+ new, and the shipping is higher!

i'm loading it with 10 lb test, the reel is a lightweight! i'll be using it for schoolie stripers and blues, plus bones and as a regular every day light-tackle saltwater reel!

i have to say, GREAT RECOMMENDATION ON THE SPHEROS!!!!!!!! rarely have i been so impressed with a reel. it was the best $70 i ever spent! i couldn't be happier, the reel feels like it's milled out of a solid piece of aluminum, the mechanics of it are so solid. i mated it to a tidemaster 8-17 lb 7 ft spinning rod and it make an amazing combo!!!
