I have a mesh basket and need to modify it by attaching small cones inside to help me avoid tangles. Seems I am forever starting to cast and finding a rats nest while pulling line out.
Anyone know where I could purchase these little cones?
Thanks

Some are up for bid on eBay right now.

This is my two cents worth - I use a cheap mesh basket, one that isn't solid anywhere. Then you get cable-ties(Zip ties) and tie them in the bottom then cut them off about 2-3inches long and just melt the end to make them round and take the sharp end off.
Tie the basket around your waist with thin bungi cord.
When fishing in the surf if a wave breaks into the basket the water just drains right through and you dont get dragged down and the cable-ties stop tangles.
I've fished rough surf all my life and my favorite basket comes from shops, some of them will keep one that got damadged somehow.
You will see some of them have a solid bottom and the other type is like mesh, you can also get a smaller one from Dollar stores depending on how big a basket you want.
I have tried the storebought ones from fly-shops and still prefer my home made one.
Besides if you do what I do and it lies in the back of the truck with all kinds of other fishing and Kayakking stuff... if it gets broken you only loose $3 at the most.
Takes 10min to make.

Besides the basket modification try stretching your fly line more frequently.
It is alway nice if you can get a big fish to do that for ya!

LeonR ! How many Zip-ties do you put in the bottom of your mesh basket and what is the distance between each others ? I guess if there to many it's not so good ?
I would like do modify my basket with your great idea !

In a shopping basket I would put no more than 12 8-10 is more than enough.
I am including a pick of a crude baskett I made in a hurry but it will give yoiu the idea. A shopping baskett works much better as you dont have to melt little slots for the zipties. Cut them off =/-2-3 inches long and then just heat up the tips to finish off (sometimes they are sharp depending on what you cut them with)

I used to make my own baskets. Note I USED to. That's until I found the new LL Bean basket for $19.95. It's an excellent basket-very rigid, deep enough, and can be modified by drilling holes in it. I've been using it all year and can't believe how nice it is for the $. The amount of time you spend making the basket could be spent on the water watching fish strip line out of it!
My thoughts...

I know sandeel9 !
In fact, I went to ll.Bean and I bought one, but I think the wrong one. It's the nylon mesh one. I believed it could be nice for traveling etc... and for the same price than the solid one. I guess I picked the wrong on. I have some trouble of tangling line with it ...
So I could send them back for refund or try to improve it...
I travel a lot and like to have light gear... The solid baskets seem to me too heavy and too big.
I saw one travel stripping basket make by Orvis, but it costs twice the price of mine.
But I am just a saltwater newbie, so I am learning of my mistakes ;-)

I've been using the llbean basket all year, almost everyday off the Plymouth jetty, and I've heard some say it's too heavy, I don't get it, it's worn around your waist - I didn't know waist's could get tired with a plastic tub hanging from it

Ok, so I think I am going to send back my nylon-mesh ll.bean basket to get my money back.
What do you think about this one ?

I know it's a fold-up one but it seem to have a good bottom !

personally i have a mesh basket from hmh and i like it a lot. no big tub hanging around your waist and the water drains right through. i haven't tried the tie downs but i don't have a lot of tangles so long as i avoid the orvis lines.
