Fish are thriving out here. On Saturday I brought some new guys to check out this area. On the outgoing when the sun came up is when things were happening. We trolled tube and worm rigs and all hooked up on big bass up to 36". Ahhhhhhh August on the fauns can be a blast.....

Sunday I launched for the outgoing evening. On the outgoing nothing happening on the bar. When I drifted off the bar to the northside it was a minefield of bass up too 37" were caught. No schoolies in the mix caught. About a dozen from 28-32". Two 34" one 36" and a nice 37". Most bass loaded with sea lice. All but two bass were caught on the tube and worm rig. I hope to be back out there tonight. The marine forecast was way off yesterday out here. Like Leon said. The chop was kinda crappy. I saw one boater out there who said was I kayak ninja. I never caught the name as wind was ripping in my ear.

That was me. I read your post all the time. I'm coming in from Nahant, Seal Cove, and the five sisters..........cruising to the faun and there you are......who else could it be.......I started telling my son "Hey George, that has to be the Kayakninja". He looked at me like I'd been on the water to long until you replied you were. We banged three, 1 going from the light in toward the island, around the corner right after crossing the north side of the faun, and the third just coming onto to the first sister from the south which was only about thirty but made my reel screem. Fat and spirited.....it was awesome. I then continued to seal cove, in tight to Nahant and egg rock with no results. I always see ton of these rockfish in tight but they do not hit the tube and worm in all that turbulence. You know 10 to 15 feet with out alot of water moving and bam. I tried the islands in Salem/Beverly harbor and had some nice shallow rocky areas and some nice fish. I always run out of worms. I am from Merrimac and the river has died out pretty much. I was killing them June and July on niner umbrella rigs. Your brave to be out there just be careful. I'll stop and chat next time it isn't so rough.

nice meeting you out there big K. The weather was way off. I contined bang fish as I was leaving. You gotta love the Tube and Worm in Red by Santini. Always fun in the daytime. I was out tonight in the same area and hookup with a lot of bass again. I saw Ray coming out as Mattardo and I were leaving. As we were talking with the tube barely in the water a 34" bass came up and smoked it while we were talking. Too funny as my reel screamed away. Biggest tonight was around 35". Condtions were nice tonight. Look foward to talking to you some time again. I was up at Joppa earlier in the spring and had some big nights.

Nice to meet you guys last night. And thanks for the worms. I picked up a fish on my first drift, but dropped him as he neared the yak. Your right, the 2 oz tube was too much, lots of bottom catchin. Pretty slow once it got real dark. I managed one nice fish, 30/32 inches or so on a 4" Strom shad.

Headed back tonight with PAX. Shaun told me about the bait shop in Winthrop (Bob's). I'm hoping they will be open around 7:00 ?????? Off to a couple shops during lunch for a lighter tube.

As it was my first time trolling one of these things it was a bit tough, mostly from the weight being too much. But watching one hit a still tube as we spoke was evidence enough that it works well.

Ps. Will artificials, like curly tail rubbers, or pork strips work in place of live worms?

Pss. I realize I will be damned for using a tube by the purists...but I like to catch fish!!!!

Does it help any if I tell you I got my new Loomis 9-weight Cross Current last week :) I'll put it to the test this weekend.

Ray please let me know what you think, i have two Loomis Nauticos that I have had for about 5years and am thinking of upgrading them to the CrossCurrent.
What are they like, the Nauticos is a very tough rod and takes a lot of abuse, Yak and boat.

I have had many Loomis rods. This one is typical (good thing), light, stiff, fast, powerful, looks pirdy....

I spent a good amount of time casting the GLX CC and standard CC 9-weights. I did notice a slight difference, but not enough to justify the nearly $300 or so price difference.

I was upgrading a 4-pc, 9-wt GL4 that was on it's last leg. The CC is a great rod. I hope to use it Saturday for Bonito, then for sure Sunday on the flats.

Ray,

I'm not sure the baitshop in winthrop will be open at 7 you might try calling them. There's a shop in everett that might be open, they sell the santini worm there, but I've taken to making my own.

I've been trolling tubes for years, I've tried all the worm substitutes, including pork-rind, scented rubber seaworm artificials, etc. NEVER have I caught anything on anything except the real thing.

Funny, I've been trying to troll less and been lobbying my dad to switch tactics and use artificials almost exclusively. I won't tell him about these posts as it is difficult to flycast or even spincast effectively at 3 mph!

good luck

Ray Bobs bait is open till 7pm weekdays and Saturday. Sunday till 3pm.

The darkside lol. Ray welcome to the world of the tube. I am new to flyfishing so it will all even out, lol.

That tube is way to heavy for the shallows. If you find a tube with a lighter weight you will hook up in the shallows. The Santini Tube in red is what I go with. You might be able to take that weight off and go weightless or replace with 1/4 to 1/2 oz. The Santini tubes come with 1/2 oz and is just perfect for me in 15ft or less trolling with braid or mono. I also use leadcore when trolling deeper or moving water to get it deeper. I let out as much line as possible to get it away from the kayak. Usually 50-75 yards or more depending on condtions.

Any chance Bob's sells those rigs?

kayakninja

He does but I would recommend going with a Santini Tube in red with the biggest worms you can get. Fishing Finatics is located on Main St. in Everett and is open till 8pm. 10 bucks for all tubes. I like red, black for overcast or night, mustard and orange. Ask for Peter is he is there. He loves us kayakers. Pretty soon you will be making your own tubes. P.S. I need help fly casting from the kayak and fishing techniques.

So Bob's has tubes, but not the Santini ones. If not I'll get some later. Patrick is picking up some too.

Fly casting from a yak isn't too tough. Most frequently sinking lines are used, which can make casting a bit tough. We can meet on the water some day for some pointers.

The "deadly" Santini tube and worm as he likes to call itis made by the guy Pet Santini who owns Fishing Finatics (However he spells it). There is another rig Iv'e used with sucess which is the one with two hooks...one upper and one lower. They love those fat juicy worms. Bob's bait has the largest sea worms in that area. Near Joppa go to Crossroads bait shop in Salisbury.

Ray, now that you are on the dark side, it is time to stick those 9" sluggos on jig heads and cast instead of trolling.

"The faun bar is so popular that nobody fishes there anymore..."

Hit the bar and surrounding area last night with above mentioned tackle. Not a good night to be paddling a yak around all night. Got pretty wind and bit choppy at times. I didn't manage any fish on the tube, but did on the Storm.

Note: most of the tube trolling was done at high tide to the very beginning on the drop. Not much water moving.

Thanks for your tips everyone.

Don't worry Sam, I landed some nice fish on the fly rod last night, including a 122# yellowfin!!!

Granted this was 2 hours after I fell asleep....

and I was on a boat crewed by a bunch of hot chicks --127-3-

Have no fear, funny fish time is here, Bonito Bunny and Mini Clouser time!!!

I was already half there as I have a SOT but last night I did the unthinkable I used the tube & worm  . Not yet my favorite way of fishing as I struggled a little bite and got zippo but I recognize that you can cover a ton of water with your lure in the water therefore increasing your chances to hook-up. Just not as interactive as the fly or spin rod. I did get a strike but did everything wrong and did not hook-up the fish.
As Ray said, it was windy and choppy at time and despite covering a lot of water did not mark many fish. A few small one here and there. The fish were definitively not there in great numbers. Four of us were out there, one trolling eels, two trolling the tube & worm and one casting plastic shad. Not a bump.

Hey!!! I got a Keepha. I can't help it you guys took forever to get out there :)

OK Ray: Let me rephrase to be more factual. "not a bump that I witnessed"
Are you talking about the 49 one, you know the one that you don't remember if you measured it with your regular tape measure or your metric one. ;)

BTW, water was in between 58 and 60 degree.

Ray

that was with the inch tape. turns out it was a bit trayed on the end, so I cut off a foot or so, problem solved.

Thats too bad that none of you hooked up out there. I have not gone out there because of the conditions lately. Keep trying.

I was out there this afternoon around 1pm and fished an hour and banged a couple of nice fish up too 35". If they are banging at that time in the heat of the day things are still good. I will be out there this evening around 7pm with Gumbo. Two yellow kayaks stop and say hello. Trolling eels!
