I was all set to have my first post describe my successful fishing trip to the Cape but there is a more than slight problem. I will be in Brewster and thought that how can I pass up a new 8 wt. to do some fishing in the flats. Well...after searching around I ordered an Echo rod/reel combo and today the reel arrived...with the wrong line and the rod-backorder without anyone bothering to tell me (I didn't order directly from Echo so I blame the shop more than them). We are leaving on Sunday and the two fly shops nearby are not known for equipment with entry-level prices (I am kicking myself for not ordering the TFO from Cabela's). Since I am leaving on Sunday I checked out fly shops there and there is a good shop in Chatham which carries Orvis, considering my budget is the Clearwater Classic 8 wt. good for SW or should I wait until I can get my hands on a TFO and Tioga reel and enjoy the FW flyfishing and bring the spin surf rod? Regarding a reel they have the Battenkill barstock but for the price I would prefer a Tioga and buy the much less expensive clearwater and realize that it won't last as long. I even thought of stopping off at a place on the way up (we're coming from NYC) but I haven't figured out a good shop along the way. Thanks for any help.

I have a 5wt Clearwater Rod, and a couple Clearwater reels. I use those rigs in fresh water, and haven't been dissappointed in their durability. However the rod is a bit softer or slow in action for my casting abilities.

Hold off for the tfo and tioga. you get what you pay for, and cabela's stands by that product 100%. I had problems with orvis and their return policy on a faulty pair of their waders. a real headache.

tight lines.

I believe that Harry Koons, at the Nauset Angler in East Orleans, carries both TFO and Echo rods. Harry's phone number is (508) 255-4242. The shop is on the road to Nauset Beach directly to the left of Joe's Beach Road Bar & Grill ( Barley Neck Inn ). Harry can also give you the latest info on the fishing in the Orleans, Chatham area.

Thanks for the advice. I wasn't aware of the Nauset Angler or that they carried fly equipment. I'll give him a call. I packed my salwater flies just in case something works out. Hopefully I'll have a nice report to write in two weeks.

I have the TFO Teton combination myself, and I couldn't recommend it more. Good luck
