Hi, what is the mininium amout of backing for a 10 wt rod used in the surf for a 10 wt rod with 30 lb backing? Mainly fishing for striper blues and albies.

My teton tioga 10 spools are loaded with 200 yards of 20lb backing. I hope someday to find out that it isn't enough!
I've never heard of anyone needing more than 200 yards, and then only for albies. If a striper rips off that much you've likely either hooked a tippet class record or your drag is way too light.

I would stay away from "Minimum amounts of backing". Your reel manf can tell you how much (Maximum) backing your reel will hold with a specific type and wt line. For me, more is better .....ya just never know when big one will show up and take a rooster tail run for europe ! Hope this helps.

I guess i should have put this in my first post. I just got a deal on a Redington Nano Titanium 10 wt. The rod feels pretty light and all of my 3 reels are 9 to 9 plus oz. The reels that are 6.5 to 8 oz hold 200 of 20 with a 9 wt line. And i plan on using a 11wt floating line on it. Than we get into the 10 wt reel, all are 9 plus oz but hold alot of backing. So i maybe looking for a reel that's not out there. Unless i can get away with about 150 of backing.

Hi Joe,
Have a look at the 9/10 Snowbee Large Arbor XS.
6.7oz(190gm), 600m GSP or 220m of Micro backing with a 9wt floater.
All s/steel internals with a sealed drag.
£175, not sure how much your side of the 'big puddle'.
A great solid reel(that's still light without being flimsy) that I have yet to hear a bad word thrown against direction.
One of the guys on here(and many other forums :) ) Matt, has put his XS 7/8 to great use in Weipa - Oz. Giant Herring, Queenies, Long Tail Tuna to name but three. After seeing those pics & all the other positive reviews I took the plunge myself and bought one for myself...no complaints :)
Hope this helps,
Martin
