Hey Guys.

Had a frustrating experience out at Montauk this weekend with the weather. I have decided to bite the bullet and buy a surf casting rod/reel as a back-up for those days when it's just too windy to fly fish. I figure it could save the day sometimes !

Have trolled the internet but there doesn't seem to be much buying information out there for surf rods/reels.

I was wondering whether any of you could offer some advice as to what to buy or any set-ups that you currently use and are happy with. I want the set-up for plug/lure fishing from shore.

Tightlines.

Iwan.

st. Croix makes a good stick with a great warranty.

topped with a penn liveliner or shimano baitrunner you'd have a great rig.

I got into a rod this year and have been thrilled with it. "Tica" is the brand name.

throws a plug or chunk pretty good when i can't flyfish.

Depends on what you want to pay...

The Mitchell Nautil 7500 is the reel that I use, I love it (loaded with 30 # power pro) Rods all vary...TICA makes a wide array very nice and affordable surf rods (10ft medium/heavy action should be good for a variety of purposes.) Everyone has their own likes and dislikes on surf equipment. I like spinning setups, but a lot of guys use conventional casting reels. I could go on for a while.... Hope this helps. --125-3

Great advice!

My first spin rod was an 8' St. Croix so that I could use it on both boats & the beach. Going with a 3500B Baitrunner will give you capacity (braid), great drag & good livelingin abilites for eeling.

I use a St. Croix Avid Spinning Surf rod and love. Great warranty too (I ran mine over this spring, no questions asked). I have a Penn 7500 one it with spools of 20# Yo-Zuri and 50# PP.
