Hey Guys.

Me and my buddy are starting to put together a long weekends fishing on the Baja Peninsula for February 2005.

We want to do surf fly fishing and are wondering what areas to target and what species will be in season during this time of the year.

We are on a limited budget and would like to do this as cheap as possible.

All your help is greatly appreciated.

Iwan.

You lucky dogs. I haven't been there for years, but the beach fishing has always been very good for many varieties of small fish. I always fished the sea of cortez side. Jacks, ladyfish, puffers, croakers, roosterfish, blah blah blah. You won't really know what you will catch until you get there and see the conditions. One of my most exciting hookups was about a 30lb spotted eagle ray that hit a crappie jig on 4 lb test. he porpoised off into the sunset. I would find some books, but nobody really talks about the smaller fish from shore because they are focused on off shore. You have to do at least one day of panga fishing. it is relatively cheap and could lead to the trip of a lifetime.

There are a number of flyfishing guide services starting up in the area. The most well known is Baja on the fly operated by Gary Graham. I would get in contact with him to find out about the conditions at that time of year. There is alaos the Baja flyfishing company. I think that Sierra mackeral are at the top of the list during that time of year. I got a couple of 10 lbs last year and they are a blast on a fly rod. wittich.

Iwan,
Just moved back to the East Coast from San Diego. Baja on the Fly is a great outfit and can provide you everything from basic info to a full blown package. You may also wanted to take a look at Ken Hanley's book Mexico - Blue Ribbon Fly Fishing Guide. It covers all of the different regions of Mexico both Fresh and Saltwater, as well as providing some great insights for doing-it-yourself for the financially challenged angler. Areas, Species, flies, seasons, where to stay, etc. If one of your local shops doesn't have it or can't get it, try Amazon.com.
